Warn Status

Maybe I'm slow on the uptake, but did you guys know that you can click the words "warn status" above the warning bar on every user's icon and see a breakdown of what/when they got warnings? Pretty good feature.

A very handy feature. Here's how I use it:

When I raise a warning level, I reply to the offending post and quote it (this gives us a record of the actual post so that if the member edits it and tries to say that he didn't do what he did, we have proof otherwise). In that post, I tell him that he's violated a board rule, which one, his warning level has been increased due to that violation, and that a second violation will result in a suspension - a third in a ban.

Then, I get the URL to my post (if you look to the upper right of each post, there is a number beside it, such as #4 - if you click it, it gives the URL to that post). I then PM the member and essentially tell him the same as what I posted, and include the URL to my reply. Finally, I increase the warn level and include in the reason something like, "Personal attack on member in post" and then post the URL to my reply.

Note one thing. If someone is banned or suspended, you need to email rather then PM - and you need to do that BEFORE you ban or suspend. Otherwise, they won't receive it.

I have a question. At what point can we take someones warning level back down if they have leveled themselves and are following rules?
I think I asked that question a while back, and the answer was that warnings never go away.
Dang, well I just told a member in a PM that their warn status could go back down. I said that simply because I saw that your could remove points as well as add them. What now?

Yeah, it can be done. We've never established a hard-and-fast rule that we've communicated to the membership. My personal rule is that I don't lower them, simply due to the fact that we can then view the history. And if someone came on and accumulated a few warnings and then went a year or two with nothing, then suddenly does something else, we know to ban. I don't think we're wedded to that - that's just my preference in handling it. Obviously, if someone did accumulate a warning or two, then goes for a considerable period without any infractions, there's a good argument to reduce the warning and let them start fresh. That's particularly the case if the warnings were accumulated early on after the member joined - they took some time to become acclemated to the Board's culture.

No right or wrong, but I would argue that if you do reduce, make sure that the person that you're doing it for is someone that has gone a significant period of time without an infraction.

10-4. Thanks Frank.

It was a new member, and someone who I don't see having any further issues. I gave no timeline for reducing the warn status, so I will wait as long as I want.

This was my first experience with warnings, and hindsight (could have done some searching or asked first)I think Franks method is the best. Being able to go back and review history is key for the system to work as intended.

Like Frank said, there is no right or wrong. I trust each and everyone of you to do the right thing. Joe if you already told him that, stick with that and see how he progresses. Put the ownership on that member. Tell him to email you in a few months and ask you to lower the warning level. Don't you keep track of him. He will kep track of himself. If you think he has been a good member...do it. Look back through the notes. If he does not follow up with you...screw it then, don't worry. Ownership is on him!
