I know that, for those of you who are familiar with me on here, I have a reputation for pessimism and negativity, which I'll not deny. I am a pessimist by my nature. With that said, it would be completely unfair to the program to pretend that this season is exactly the same as the past 7 or so. We got to a bowl. We got a win over a good Colorado team. The defense showed a lot this season. Rhule showed willingness to make a change in bringing in Holgo. It is not all negative. We finally got the bowlless streak off our backs, something that was truly embarrassing for this program. So credit is due there.

That said, I think we'd all be lying if we didn't say this season was a severe disappointment. It's not so much the losing as how they lost: It's the same thing we've seen for years, hell, decades now honestly: Self-implosions. Mistakes. No program in the country is more masochistic than Nebraska. I am not joking when I say thoughts of a curse have crossed my mind, because, frankly, some of it I don't feel I can explain. We've been a statistical anomaly for multiple seasons.

I think it would be unfair to attribute it all to the coaches and players. Luck genuinely has been absolutely cruel to us. There's some bounces of the ball that just should not go that way that many times in a row. However, that only goes so far. This was not a fun season. It sure started out a fun season. Even after the debacle at Bloomington, the season was more than salvageable. But it was only barely salvaged.

I think in the Wisconsin game, we saw a good glimpse of what this team could be when they stop hurting themselves so much. There is clearly a good team under the crap, a truly wretched team does not do what Nebraska did to Wisconsin and Colorado (even considering how down of a season Wisconsin had). This, of course, only makes it more frustrating. In my opinion, the UCLA game was the least acceptable loss. The Indiana game was certainly far more embarrassing. But the UCLA game was truly inexcusable to even lose. Most of us felt Indiana was at best a tossup. Not so with UCLA. That still surprised me how flat we came out.

We learned:

There are pieces here of a good team and that good coordinating makes a difference. Yes, the O looked bad against Iowa, but Holgo has already improved the offense as far as I can tell.

The defense show greatness at times but flaws at other times.

Foley needs to go and frankly should be charged with fraud. Credit to John Hohl for finding his legs near the end, and Buschini was good, but otherwise, there is nothing positive about our special teams.

Satterfield needs to go just to get him out.

The honeymoon for Rhule is over.

Overall, I give the season a D grade. 6 wins keeps it from an F. But it's nothing impressive, and it's still very disappointing overall.

I learned that I really didn't learn anything.  We are basically in the same spot, but we do get a bowl so that is fun.  The jury is out until next season, but I am expecting some noticeable improvements or we are hitting the reset button once more.

Right down the middle at a solid C.  6-6 season.  That's pretty much right at a C.  We are slightly in a better situation than last year.  We are at .500 and we get a bowl game with the practices that go with it to help prepare for next year.  We are seeing changes being made in the program to attempt to improve things.

I voted a C, it was a passable grade based off the past decade of results but barely satisfactory.

im a firm believer you make your own luck. In the case of Nebraska football we never seem to have luck on our side because we are mediocre and inconsistent with so many facets of the game.

We do not capitalize on our scoring opportunities enough as we should. Whether via untimely penalties, dropped/errant passes, incoherent play calling.  Our offense left much to be desired and hung our defense out to dry more often than not.

Defensively we could rise to the occasion and look lights out yet also look pedestrian against not very good offenses. At times we were stout and times we couldn’t get off the field on 3rd down or in key situations.

our special teams were the worst in program history.

overall- a C- student who has the potential to be an A or B student yet for whatever reason doesn’t study, doesn’t do homework and clearly isn’t applying itself as well as one could given the talent on hand and fairly easy schedule.  Outside of Ohio state and maybe Colorado (depending on how much value you put in their stars) I don’t think any other team had a talent advantage over us and yet here we are at 6-6.

Same, don’t feel really any different this year than I did a year ago at this time. 1 game better record wise- Colorado and wiscy were nice but our schedule really setup nicely for 8-4 type campaign.

if we lose the bowl and finish 6-7, how much progress does that really represent over a 5-7 campaign we’ve grown accustomed to?

:yeah
Very good analogy.  Should easily be a B student with potential to be A but lacks attention to details, misses assignments here and there, should get higher grades on easier tests but just doesn’t.

Nationally, this team is still irrelevant.  They were relevant for a few weeks after running CU off the field.  Illinois is currently ranked and sitting 5th in the Big 10.  That is realistically where NU should have been this season imo.

This team got humiliated vs Indiana, lost 2 games at home it had no business losing, didn't win a game it wasn't supposed to, and continues to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory in the most incredible of ways.   Just because Nebraska hasn't been to a bowl in 7 years doesn't make it an acceptable outcome imo.

This doesn't mean there aren't positives or I'm confident Rhule will fail at NU, but this season in a vacuum was a failure imo.

What did I learn?  This team needs more speed and play makers.  This program's use of the portal in totality has probably been counterproductive.
