I very much agree with you. I think if you have a gun, intentionally insert yourself into a potentially dangerous situation (like what we saw in Wisconsin earlier this year), get attacked, and then shoot/kill another human, you probably gave up your right to any self-defense claim.

With some laws, there should be some room for interpretation, and I think that kid in Wisconsin is still facing murder charges but I haven't looked into it in awhile so I may be wrong. But, it's a Class A example of what irresponsible gun ownership looks like and why we have a gun violence problem in this country.

Things I learned or had reaffirmed.

1- Pollsters need to revise their methods.  I think there is something to the theory that many Trump voters are embarrassed to admit it and therefore skew results. But I also think there has to be something fundamentally wrong with their data collection methods. I think how they do it is funneling the answers a certain way and is no longer random enough to truly be representative. Polling needs an overhaul as it is pretty much useless as is.

2- Some states suck at conducting elections. It doesn’t have to be as difficult or complicated as many places seem to make it. I hate to brag about Colorado again, and I’m sure even Colorado could improve, but damn, give the voters options, make it easy and convenient and then count the damn votes timely. It’s ridiculous to sit on mail-in ballots and then count them at the end. It just looks bad and provides an opening for doubt and ridicule. We can do better.

3- About half our citizenry really doesn’t understand or want to abide by the basic tenets of our country. Liberty, freedom, equality, fairness, representative government, public service...... all have been perverted beyond recognition by far too many in this country. At the present time yes, I am primarily talking about the far right but I also feel the far left presents a problem. It is extremely disheartening to have witnessed the last 4 years and then come to the realization that apparently 48%ish were okay with perpetuating it. And I don’t have a solution that I think is achievable. Everyone needs to moderate a bit, listen to the other side, instead of demonizing them, and try to arrive at some common ground in between. But, like I said, I don’t think it can or will happen. I only see it getting worse and that is scary and concerning.

4- As a (former) Republican (the party and politicians have changed, whereas I have changed very little) I wanted to see a blue wave this cycle to send a message of repudiation to the current Republican Party. Didn’t get it. Generally I think the country is best off when one party does not have complete control and there is a bit of gridlock in Congress. But once in awhile, like now, it becomes necessary to turn the tide and right some wrongs. At least we got rid of the biggest threat and problem but I wonder if we will make any headway on advancing or fixing anything. Not really anything I learned but rather had reaffirmed and that makes you question what the future has in store. I fear the grand experiment is about over unless some rather significant changes are made.

 
I’ve learned to rationalize the Repub loss. If you’re  a farmer, expect prices to go up. More people on welfare=more corn syrup and more snap money. Higher gas prices=higher demand for ethanol. 

feel bad for the cops though  They need our support now more than ever. I hope all of us cop supporters can rally around them and give support for the next four years.

Because if we’re being honest, Trump is a buffoon. Had he done one less thing, like not insult a dead John McCain, he’d won Arizona. That is all the it would have taken in all the oceans of insult he laid.  How the dems could not beat an incumbent that has said the things he has said shows how much most people dislike the Democratic Party and its principles.

I'm guessing there will be less people on welfare as the economy recovers. Btw, if you support subsidies for farmers you should also support welfare, since they are both paid by the government.

What police officers should want is the stain of bad cops removed from their police force. Good cops should want their departments reviewed so those cops can be removed. They should also be open to getting help in dealing with non violent crimes and cases that someone trained to deal with people with mental illnesses are better equipped to deal with. And lastly, Biden wants to increase police funding.

If you think the police need to be coddled then you must think they are weak.

That's part of it, but it shows people treat politics like a sport and are easily brainwashed and manipulated. There are a lot of things people don't like about the Democratic party aren't actually true about the Democratic party. E.g. Biden was accused of being a Socialist and a lot of people believed it. A huge chunk of my fellow Christians were duped into thinking Trump was a Christian, when he conveniently became one in 2016, and they are willing to abandon all of their moral values for him. This is much more a sign of insane support of someone because they had an R by their name, than it is a dislike for Democratic principles. We have a stupid population.

That said the DNC should be way better than it is.

I agree with a lot of this except the Dems DID beat the incumbent in this particular case.

But yes, there is not a whole lot more likeable about the dem party over the R party. It's just that in recent history the R has been for Repugnant. I'm a pretty conservative fellow but I didn't find the Obama years distasteful or harmful, unlike the last four. Both parties have a whole bunch of soul searching and adjusting to do.

Tell me why most of Nebraska, particularly central Nebraska, is republican then? Tell them, not me.

So you blame Obama and the Dems for giving black people the audacity to want to be treated equal? Or am I totally misunderstanding you?

And don’t get me wrong, I have a lot of problems with a lot of things that have taken place in the name of social injustice. But I don’t conflate those things with the legitimate cause that some of the protesters are fighting for. I don’t assume or equate that those who are looting and causing destruction are doing those things for the sake of equality. There are too many sides and issues at play to blame one on the other.

The GOP has done a great job of portraying Democrats how they want to and people buying in, and they've also done a good job at getting people to vote against their own self interests. It is actually fairly insane for a farmer to vote for Trump based on what he has done to directly hurt farmers the past 4 years.

The vast majority of the protests held over the summer were peaceful, there have been instances of instigators looting, and I could be wrong, but I'm guessing you didn't grow up seeing people who looked like you treated badly based on what they looked like. Being surrounded by that daily likely makes one more likely to react in a less than docile way.

What is scary about Harris?

What slaughter are you talking about? Maybe if the police hadn't reacted to protests the way they did, and Trump had done more than jack s#!t to respond (and in fact made it worse), real progress could have started.
