What did we learn UCLA edition

I hate that we lost,  and I do think there are problems,  but some of the comments here are so out of left field it is ridiculous.   For instance,  blaming our defense for anything,  at all,  during the last two years is laughable.   Pair or current defense with any competent offense and we are top 25 this year and last year.

We have plenty of talent to be a top 25 team.   Again,  placing blame anywhere but in coaching is wrong imo.

Our freshman QB made some mistakes this season but we should be able to survive those mistakes with the level our defense is playing at.

We need a new OC.  Hopefully MR will realize that soon.   If not,  I don't believe he sees year 4 at Nebraska and that is really sad because I think he is a good man and a good coach.

That's on Rhule for letting it continue and faster.  If he's not going to do what needs to be done then he's not a good coach and he should not being paid to coach.
Everyone blames the last party for current failure.  So is the reason Indiana is winning because Tom Allen left the cupboard full of 5 star talent for the new guy?  No.  Cignetti went out and brought in his talent, and is making that a winner in year 1.  Watch the games man, we don't have speed, we don't have lineman, we don't have talent that resembles a top 25 class.  Getting a 5 star QB does inflate those rankings as well.  Having a 5 star QB does nothing when you have 2 star line play.  Having a 4 star WR's mean nothing if our 5 star QB can't have time to throw the ball.  It does not take a rocket scientist to know that we need to start the focus on line play to build this team.  This has been ignored since Callahan was coach.    We are still Nebraska to some of these recruiting analysts, mainly Sean Callahan, and our players are given incorrect rankings.  That is my opinion on that matter. Watched this for too many years now, and the players rankings don't resemble the quality on the field.  Do they?  I judge from what I see on the field and I have not seen Top 25 talent since since 2009.  I have not seen those players on the field here since then and they were Callahan recruits still.  If we don't recruit better lineman, then we may never know what talent we do have on this team.

UCLA is better than their record especially looking at their schedule.  I mean, we might be 0-fer on the season with that schedule.

HH looked pretty good with his throws. Some high but the passes looked crisp. Seemed to be making good reads except for running out of bounds on 3rd down.

That was about it for learning.

A lot of the same that we’ve seen in previous games defensively and offensively. And still holding my breath on EVERY special teams play.

I continue to disagree with the talent aspect. How can the recruiting rankings be so wrong on mostly NU (versus seemingly everyone else) for the better part of 25 years now? Outside of Frost's last full recruiting class, NU has been top 25, with a fair amount of top20 classes in there.

Without letting Rhule and company off the hook, I do wonder if there's still a bad mental element from previous staff within this program that NU is still trying to exercise.
We lack speed at Running Back.  Barney can fly at WR.  Lloyd has speed but we don’t see much of him.  Fidone runs like a robot.

Our gamer on D this entire year is a walk on (Bullock).  I still think our best player on D last year was Omar Brown.  A Northern Iowa transfer.

We took a kicker out of Westside that was a lock.  He was incredible his senior year.  We miss PATs.  I know it’s not him kicking, but he struggled last year.

Our 5 star QB does exactly what Adrian Martinez did….Stand in the pocket for too long and then force throws.  He has to start throwing to where the receiver is going to be, not after he gets open.

It's interesting listening to this coaching staff, since they arrived always talking about how these big ten games go.  They always say things like, "we prepare for it to be a one score game", or "whoever has the ball last." Some sort of coach speak to infer that they are expecting every game to go down to the wire.

While I know that isn't the only problem we have, it just dawned on me tonight...and I'm a little ashamed I didn't see it sooner.  We play offense to get to the fourth quarter in a close game...ahead or behind.  We are not aggressive, we don't play to win offensively.  We play to keep the game close, because that's big ten football.

How about for the next 3 games, don't have offensive gameplans trying to get to the fourth quarter with a chance to win...call the game offensively, trying to attack...idk we are just so predictable and conservative...it makes so much sense now that this light bulb went off in my brain.

We just gave up 27 points to UCLA, a 2-5 team.  I know the offense gave them 7, but the defense did not really stop the Bruins much today.  WE gave up 56 against Indiana..............We let Illinois just walk down the field and score when the game was on the line.  The defense is not as stout as it was last season.  What has Rhule showed you so far that would lead you to think he is better than Riley, Frost or Callahan for that matter? Show some evidence, and I would gladly agree with you.  I don't like the thought that this program may be heading toward another firing and coach search.  Apparently we are not good at hiring the right guy.  Do I think that at one time Rhule was a decent coach at one point, yes, but having money and a lot of it, often leads to complacency and I see that on his face during conferences and sometimes on the sidelines.  Coaches today really don't care like they once did.  Huge contracts and guaranteed money leads to a lot of this.  We don't make matters any better by throwing money at it each time.  Desperation is  and can be ugly.

I don’t agree with anyone saying we don’t have talent. Nebraska hasn’t been good in ages, so there is no reason for the recruiting sites to be biased in our favor, yet we almost always have a top 30 recruiting class. Our average ranking the past 10 years is 28. There’s no reason we shouldn’t have some top 25 seasons sprinkled in there.

This is a lack of player development and in game coaching problem. Possibly scheme too. Some combination of the 3. I know recruiting rankings aren’t perfect but I think we have one of the worst results to ranking ratio of anyone if not the worst.
Completely agree. I can argue that we have more talented players than half of teams in the Big 10. However, opposing coaches have been able to get way more from their players than our genius coaches. We need to face the truth that having the fastest car on the pitch means absolutely nothing if your driver is a dumba$$. Our coaches are bad all around. It starts with Rhule and trickles down. Foley should not even be allowed on campus, let alone the football field.
