What did we learn UCLA edition

I liked the energy that HH brought when he came in. Made some errors in some situations, but I felt the mood pick up a bit with him out there

I learned this teams losing streak with a bowl game on the line has ventured into the lore of bowl game loses in the 80's/90's and seasons without a bowl game very quickly.

Really folks if Indiana wouldn't have punked us so badly with a first year coach, I don't know if I would be so harsh on Rhule and his staff right now.  How many times each season do we see first year head coaches take a program and win games and make bowl games?  More than we want to admit.  We keep going in reverse.  We an agree. that the last guy here to win was Pelini.  Pelini was a first time first year head coach.  I say we need to back to that for starters and give that some time, but giving guys like Riley, Frost, and now Rhule more than a few years( 2 or more) has not worked.  We have not seen signs of this program making strides to improve.  I have not seen improvement in any of this team other than QB play was an upgrade, but wonder if that actually is an upgrade now.
A couple of things. Pelini was our last HC to win.  And the last coach to actually develop players.  SJB to DB (in the middle if a game), Cody Glenn, and others had success in a completely different position.  Then the QB graveyards....The 9-10 win seasons and bowling every year.  I'd argue that his lack of success was the result of several factors.  The admn hating him, lack of support, Carl leaving, Sanders getting fired, his attitude and moving to the B1G. I think given more time, Bo would have found a way to win in the B1G.  No NU coaches since have had any success there.

This team, other than TO's, has not really improved in any area.  No player development.  Who here is better in year 2 than year 1?  I'd argue most are the same and some possibly have taken a step back.  As mentioned by Rhule in todays presser, teams know how to shut down our O.  Satt has no answers.  We hired a now 26 year old to coach WR's.  Yes we have 2 Barney and Banks who are in the top 5 for consecutive targets, but how many of those were screens?  The QB?  The play calls?  Are they getting open?  Do they run correct routes? Are they good at the basics that can make them great?  If I guy isn't a burner, design plays to help them.  Hone their craft as route runners to use leverage and foot placement to get to some separation,   We are into the meat (have been of conference play) and Rialoa has regressed from game 1 until 9.  Until today, last passing TD was 9/28....What Div I QB has gone that long?  Look at our 2nd half scoring.  Outside of Purdue, it's below average and that's being kind.

Still seeing some of the same penalties, non-existent ST play, bad play calling, White no longer getting pressure (teams have schemed his D), pass D is getting worse, and the Jekyll and Hyde team that plays toe to toe with OSU and then poops their pants against a 2-5 team at home.  We might get talent per the recruiting sites, but we sure as hell don't develop it or live up to the star power.  That's a combination of coaching (develop them and putting them in a position to win) and poor scouting of guys.

We lost 8 bowls in a row under TO and folks wanted him fired.  We haven't BEEN BOWLING in that many years and every coach needs more time......To put that in perspective, kids were are looking at to recruit would have been around 8-9 the last time we went bowling.  That's 8 years or approximately 96-120 missed practices for the 5th yr seniors.....

Wow.  That's truly amazing to think about in some ways.  Here we go again. We are in year 2 of a staffs progress and I think we all know that this is not going in the right direction.

Had we gone bowling last year that would've been 12-15 practices for the returning guys.  Bowling this year and that'd be another 12-15...Can't talk about the advantage of those practices. I know a lot of teams talked about using half to let the younger guys get a half of those to develop and use the remaining ones to put in the package for the bowl. Unsure what it'll look like now for teams getting to the play offs....

I blame the players as much as the coaches. We need some players who are willing to be vocal and call out players who are underperforming. The players say the same BS their coaches say. They say the right things but they never back it up come game time. They just became accustomed to losing and then answering questions claiming they are disappointed with the results. I do not see any fire in any of the players or coaches. I would take Pelini’s fire over the BS we are fed week in week out. I guess having a nice guy who losses is more important than an angry guy who wins.

A complete tangent. But I think it would be so amazing if the head coach contracts were built around paying $1M per win. Think about it.

Rhule gets $9M per year on an 8 year contract. $66M of that is guaranteed money.

So for these first three seasons where he's insulated he gets $9M to just completely f*** up. But what if he were paid $1M per win? Lots of motivation to win 10 games. At a subconscious level at a minimum, there's just no reason to fire your buddies when your mind knows you walk with $66M total if you get fired.

You could go buy a house in La Jolla in cash and sip mai tai's for the rest of your life with that kind of money.

I realize it's a total fantasy discussion point, but this is just a quagmire for next season unless we get a great running back out of the portal.

Sorry- this is BS.  We were overlooking them for what- an off week?
All I heard from every source was "This was a lock. No chance we would lose this game. UCLA is bad, we will win this game."  "The way we played against Ohio St., UCLA will be easy"

Look at the "expert" picks thread. Look at the Vegas line.

Guess who came in and curb stomped the "favorites".

I voted we would lose an hour after it was posted, we needed this to be bowl eligible I knew we'd choke, it's what we do.

I know everybody wants satt fired but my question is.  Why dues EVERY DAMN QUARTERBACK EVER have a career night when they play us?  Think about it. I so fing sick of it.
