What did we learn? UTEP edition

We beat a team we were expected to beat. Learning will happen next week when we face the buffalo wings.

Well, we didn't just "beat them," I suppose. We beat the Vegas spread and could have probably fairly easily cracked 50 if the first team offense had stayed in the game.

But totally agree that we'll see whether or not we're a decent team by somewhere around 8:30 PM next Saturday night.

I knew he had talent and an arm, but Raiola makes some elite throws.   You look at both those TD's and those are throws NU's QB's haven't even attempted and they are put in places where they are complete or incomplete vs compete.  You can put the pass Neyor didn't bring down in that category as well.  Those are the type of throws Burrow was making as a 5th year SR.

Here's a thought that will confound and piss off quite a few of our fans: the offense we're running this season is more like Callahan's West Coast offense than any other scheme Husker football has seen since roughly the late 70's.

There is certainly a hybridization of some concepts at play - something that Rhule and Satterfield clearly love. But it's funny how West Coast this system is now becoming, something Husker fans kind of hated when Callahan was here.

The pass protection out of the big sets is something that will be really interesting to watch. I think Rhule will ride or die on that concept, I really do.

We’re well past that.  Raiola  is the exact QB that Callahan would have loved.   Can you imagine trying to force an option offensive in the modern era of defense?  It’s a dinosaur and it’s dead. 
 

and I remember the crowd cheers when we came out and threw a pass to open up the game. Spring game, I think.

While people labeled their ire towards the west coast, the real anger was just towards us being a soft a$$ team. Rhule's units have no such problem.

When they scored to make it 7-7, we then went 3 and out and they got the ball back again and they could have gotten some momentum but I think we stuffed them for a 3 and out. 

It really had a “here we go again” feeling there for a bit. But our next drive was the fumble then safety and then things took off. 

Based off recent experience, prior to the safety I thought this might turn into an uncomfortable game. So I learned we can go through at least a little adversity without the wheels falling off.

West Coast offense is pass heavy and short "dink and dunk" passes.  Yesterday was run heavy with no hesitation to throw it down the field.   Quite the opposite of West Coast.

Benhart is slow but that guy is a legit NFL prospect

Was it just me, or was anyone else surprised they didn’t make it a point to get Fidone the ball more today? 
then again maybe they weren’t showing everything before next week. 

This is another obvious dissimilarity our offense has with west coast offenses.  Our TEs are primarily blockers, and our runningback are hardly used in the passing game.  They're mainly downhill runners and blockers.

Not that there's anything wrong with west coast offenses.  It's just not what we do.

Dowdell long run was 12 yards.

RJohnson's long run was 13 yards

Ervin's long run was 11 yards.

EJohnson's long run was 42 yards.

I think you're remembering more than was there.

That 13-yard run by R Johnson was spectacular! I never saw him run like that before. He was making defenders miss and showing great shiftiness. As far as taking it to the house, he is the biggest threat. Dowdell and E Johnson can give them that thunder and lightning combination.

You are correct. I was there. They lined up in a traditional I Formation, then motioned into a spread set, and the crowd applauded.
