What did we learn? UTEP edition

I didn't notice until I rewatched a bit of the game yesterday, but Benhart still really struggles pass blocking.   The first couple series he couldn't even get a hand on his man.  They ended up giving him some help with a back or guard or TE, and it became less noticeable.

On one hand I'm glad we have coaches that can recognize he needs the help and gives it to him, on the other hand it's frustrating he still struggles that much.  Seems like he's been starting forever.

So one thing that has been bugging me since the game.  Gifford had one tackle, and Tommi Hill was very quiet.  Was that because UTEP was avoiding them, or did they just not play well?

I am learning not many people respect Emmet Johnson.  I've watched a bunch analysis videos and prediction stuff.  More than a handful of people saying Dowdel looked the best by far.  I think he had a good game but Emmet out gained him, had an explosive run and caught a pass.  He performs and seems his relegated back to being the 4th back.

I think Dowdell looked the best, but not by far.  I have no problems with the case you made for E. Johnson.

What surprised me was Rhule saying R. Johnson needed to make weight if he wanted to play.  He made the weight and ended up starting and getting the most carries.

I had the same question about Hill.  I assume they were mostly throwing away from him.

Not sure on Gifford.  Maybe their run game didn't get to him and they were mostly throwing deep at the CB opposite Hill?

They ran 50 plays I think...

16 completions, not a lot of chances for tackles.  No starter played over 30 snaps on D.  So there is a chance that Hill and Gifford might have been in for what, 20 plays each?

Also, it appears NU did not blitz once.

I know everyone likes to s#!t on Fidone, but it's pretty hard to do much when everyone whiffs on their blocks (5:13)

I would also like to see what he can do with more vertical routes as well

I hope they ran the stair for that. Seeing it live was infuriating. Probably the worst effort on a play in a long time. If they just chip their guys it's a nice gain. Actually hold the block and Fidone is one-on-one with the safety with plenty of field to leverage.
