What Did We Learn - Wisconsin Edition

The game against Iowa will tell us a lot about Tony white’s defense. If defense plays well next two games, he is worth another chance next year. If not, I would like us to open the check book and get an excellent defensive coordinator for next year.
White is better than Chinander and needs to get his guys into his system.  He inherited a mess. The players play hard for him. Consistency in the coaching ranks will pay dividends over the long run if he can coach his guys well. The secondary is a hot mess but fixable.

Little things can say a lot.

The decision to bench Fidone is one of them. Watching his backup rumble for major yards after contact sends the message that individual effort is up to the individual. My understanding is that Rhule gave that speech to the team this week. That's pretty obvious advice you'd assumed coaches had been giving all season, but it did seem to have teamwide results.

Holgorsen didn't exactly reinvent the wheel with this offense. They ran a lot of the same plays they've run all season. But the calls were situationally much better, and were matched by execution.

Those two are just much better tight ends. It’s pretty simple. Much better movement, faster, and just as reliable with their hands.
Hate to say it, but Fidone is limited by his inability to move fluidly.  Two knee surgeries hurt for sure, but he appears too lope when running and has very little "bend" to block and cuts up field with the speed and agility of a semi tractor trailer making a 3 point turn in an alley.  Again, knees have got to be part of this.  But could he have made those plays that were made yesterday......

They did run the TE screen to Boerkecher yesterday that Fidone would get blown up on because he couldn't get turned up field, and it went for either a 1st down or very close to one.

Not sure where Umanmielen has been this year but he saw 13 snaps yesterday and got three tackles and a QB hurry.

The DBs continue to be bad.  Six missed tackles.  Blown coverages.  Hartzog gave up 5 catches for 72 yards.  Blye Hill made his season debut.  Maybe getting him healthy will help.

Not really the biggest part of his job but at least some props to Hill on forcing that fumble before the half.

A lot to be happy about, but defensive tackling needs to be a lot better, and that's an attitude, not a skill.

Senior Day make me realize this team can actually get better with less "experience"
