He could be getting coached to do that. He was splitting with R. Johnson and someone noted he is the “receiving” back (play call tendency). They may want him to seek contact as a way to exert plays on the defense and sub in two more quality backs when reps get high or workload becomes too much. Rhule has said we want to run and we want to be physical, but a lot of other pieces are fast (wr pop passes) and R. Johnson out of the backfield. His “job” may be to hit them where it hurts.Assuming you're talking about Hayden, that's probably about right. They got almost exactly the same grade on running the ball. But Hayden averaged more yards per carry and more yards per carry after contact. Hayden also got credit for a breakaway run (15+ yards) while Dowdell didn't.
Dowdell is fun to watch but he seems to be pretty limited as a back. He's basically a one-trick pony: run as hard as you can and try to run over the first odd-colored jersey you see. He did have the hurdle which was fun and broke one tackle in the second half (running left) and got some extra yards. But, for the most part, he's been getting however many yards the OL blocks for.
