What do you want in a Defense?

I really just want a punishing front that pressures QB's into submission by the half, and some true ball hawks in the secondary.

A defense that can stop the run early. Force an offense to throw, then have DB's who can extend coverage long enough for the LB's to find the QB. Force turnovers and gain the short field. At least get a FG on every turnover.

Years ago, back when $250,000 was a lot of money to pay a school to come to Lincoln, (paraphrasing) an opposing coach was asked about how it felt to get paid $250,000 to play in Lincoln. His response was, "It might be enough to pay for the air ambulance to get our kids back home." Let's get back to that.

Defense? Is stopping everything too much to ask? Probably. So, this year we have real concerns again @ the LB position and I'm really hoping Ivy Rose and Newby solve some of those. CB is iffy too, though I think we have some decent experience coming back and could conceivably be better at that position. Safety, I think we're pretty solid.

DL, well, could be a stellar group, especially if Val and Williams take it to the next level. Might have some dropoff @ DE, though, not sure, seems like we have some decent new talent coming in there.

Would love to see a shut out--maybe two.

Mainly don't want to see any more embarassing performances(i.e., blowouts, 400+ yd rushers) ala the last 2 regimes. Banker, well, I can't say as I'm exuding with confidence over the guy, but hopefully he and staff prove me wrong.

I want a defense that is built to stop the run and force the team to make passes to win. This is college. Even very good teams have a more difficult time winning with only the pass and there are more chances for turnovers. Keep more guys up to stop the run than we have in the past 6-7 years. The run gets stopped. If it's a pass, we have enough guys to put pressure on the QB to make him get rid of the ball very quickly and potentially make mistakes.
