What if we fix the conference?

There is something I havent really seen any of the writers or posters really mention in this frenzy of conference politics/corp take overs.

Could Nebraska and Mizz to an extent be trying to force a coup on the big 12? Ideally all the parties in the Big12 would want to strengthen the conference. This whole thing could probably go away if the schools were actually made equals in the conference. Texas has way to much of a weighted vote (I dont mean just the horns but the state), there really is no chance for lower schools to ever really make an impact on the conference, because of the money sharing model. The big10 does it right, and nobody can argue that, because at the end of the day Ohio State gets just as much of the pie as Northwestern does. The money piece means that both schools are on equal footing, but are still allowed to make their own thing and make their own mark on the conference. It also means the schools still get money from all the other stuff they do, which is why ohio state is worth so much more than northwestern, but at the same time when they go to the table they are equals.

Beebe has shown that he needs to be shown the door. The way he has handled this whole process has been pitiful. He has made the Big12 look like a bunch of schmucks. I doubt he is crazy/smart enough to have plotted out that this whole ordeal would finally create the rivalries the league has been missing. Cause I really see alot of grudge, and pride filled football coming up no matter what happens. We never really had a rivalry with Texas but this thing sure has made sure that the little fire is a full blown forest fire. As of right now texas and nu could go into october winless and it will still be a primetime game cause of the split this has put into the conference.

If Nebraska can force beebe to fix the conference, like telling Texas they cant have their own channel, and maybe create its own channel/partnerships (make its own online streaming network) or promise the TV contracts for next year will fix the imbalances (shoot get rid of the provision where Big10 games trump Big12 on ABC/ESPN), they will become Saints in this league. Texas wants to pit everything on Nebraska because if we leave without declaring enough reasons why (I think there are plenty of reasons to back it up) they can blame Nebraska for destroying the league and not themselves.

Long story short, all the talk has been about teams going and nothing about fixing the conference. And again, I live in cbus, so yeah Id love to be able to drive 10 miles down the street to see nebraska play every few years, but I also dont like the idea of the super conferences that are about to be formed. Get rid of Beebe and bring in somebody who has balls that can get the job done.

Why does everyone think Nebraska wants the Big 12 to distribute the wealth equally? That HURTS Nebraska because they way the Revenue model is set up now FAVORS TV appearances. Nebraska to the Big 10 has more to do with the academic prestige of the conference than the money. The money is the icing on the cake. Nebraska fits in way better with the other "Land Grant" Universities of the Big 10, the Tradition of the schools fits in with ours, etc.

The only way NU stays in the Big 12 is because of guilt. Kansas, K-State, ISU are already crying, calling, begging for NU to stay. If NU does stay, we need to get some sort of assurance from Texas that they will not stand in the way of a Big 12 Network. Also, if Nebraska stays, why not look at Big 12 expansion? I know there are a lack of quality teams to fill, but I think some combo of the following would be a good mix: Arkansas, New Mexico, Boise St, Utah, Colorado State, BYU, Wyoming, or Air Force.

None of those teams are the "Home Run", but would help expand the footprint of the Conference, establish new rivalries, help current rivalries, and re-establish old rivalries. Arkansas would be tough to pry from the SEC, but if we could guarantee the Conference Network w/X amount of dollars, it may benefit Arkansas to leave the SEC.

All that said. I hope the following happens: Missouri, Nebraska, Rutgers, Syracuse, and Notre Dame join the Big 10/Televen/16/Great Lakes Conference whatever it will be called. I think the best way for this conference to work logistically is for 2 8 team divisions. West - Nebraska, Missouri, Minnesota, Iowa, Illinois, Wisconsin, Purdue, and Notre Dame. East - Northwestern, Michigan, Michigan State, Ohio State, Syracuse, Rutgers, Penn State, and Indiana. 9 Conference Games, 7 division and 2 out of division, round robin set up. This would help reduce the travel from the west to east for the athletes. For the Olympic sports, a 2x2 model could be implemented for road trips to lessen the travel time. If NU goes to Rutgers for a basketball game, they would then play at Syracuse on the same trip.

GO BIG RED!

I don't see texass willing to do anything but push us around. If they were really committed to the conference and cared about it's members they would be trying to negotiate not threaten.

We can't fix the conference because Texas doesn't want to play fair. If only one side is making concessions it can't work. Texas will forever get their way so we might as well just leave.

sorry that i didnt even read a post before posting this....but there is no way that i would want to have nebraska be a member of the XII.

the way that the powers that be used the media in texas to put out disingenious stories about nebraska, the way the legislature in texas is

deaste in demanding that baylor be included leaves a bad taste.

i see where chip brown has started to back off his rhetoric and saying how good the relationship between texas and nebraska are at the upper levels of administration. purposefully naming perlman and above.

this just does not sit right....the dissing of osborne and trying to bullying the process.

well the rest of the big XII will get what they deserve.

agreed but its not about fairness. everyone is out for themselves and their interests but most understand the need to negotiate with others in order to move forward together.

Texas doesn't do that. A lot of times because they don't have to but its also born from their (and their state's) notorious arrogance.

If texas was interested in negotiating and making concessions to Nebraska/Missouri in order to save the league, they would have done that- behind the scenes, at the B12 meetings.

Instead, they fed threats through Chip Brown and their conference issued little deadlines.

the only "negotiating" they know are through bribery or at the end of the sword.

If none of this expansion business takes place, think of what this will do to conference unity.

Honestly, all the "rivalries" in the Big XII had a manufactured feel to them and with the exception of Texas/OU no one outside of the Big XII really knew or cared about them. The stuff that's gone on the past few weeks with all the talks of expansion...that could fuel all kinds of new rivalries:

Everyone (minus MU) will be mad at NU for "turning our backs on tradition and the good of the conference."

NU will hold a grudge over every team for believing this situation is all their fault.

KU, KSU, ISU, CU and Baylor will be incredibly pi$$ed at everyone else for trying to not only leave them in the dust, but possibly ending football relevancy at their respective schools and in some cases ending football and athletics.

CU will be furious at Baylor for trying to force them out of a possible Pac 10/Big 12 deal.

Texas just sits back, smiles and watch the mess they created...which is enough to pi$$-off anyone.

Maybe Beebe is a strategic mastermind and this was all part of an elaborate plan that he had in mind when he first set out as commish of the Big XII. Look at all the free pub his conference is now getting and he didn't even have to do or say a anything. Now there will be real rivalries having real animus backing them, none of this circling of names and pointing east BS. Better still is that now the entire country knows about them!!!

Maybe there is still more to come, maybe....

I'm kidding this conference is totally F'd and nothing short of a miracle will save it.
