What they need to do for next year.

I Just posted this on another thread but applies here

We had a year where the 4 games we lost we scored over 30 pts in each

The stats are really staggering when u consider them

Gave up 653 yds

Gave up 63 pts 500 yds and 371 yds rushing

Gave up 70 pts 640 yds and 539 yds rushing

And just to top it off with the vaunted top pass d

Gave up 45 pts 589 yds and 427 passing
The standard excuse is Bo's first couple recruiting classes were lacking. Shouldn't matter. This was a defense chalk full of Seniors. There was more than enough time to coach up the guys we did have, snag some JUCO guys to help, and turn them into a respectable defense. This was unequivocally a coaching failure.

I suppose the excuse next year will be, well, these guys are young - got to give them time to learn the defense. That could take years, if it happens at all.
The biggest question i have is bo clearly trusts beck with the offense as is evident by the underclassmen that have been playing the last few years, he let beck put in the best players, yet on d time and time again he refuses to put in younger kids in favor of vets that are clearly less talented but "know the system". I say take a shot with the younger guys that have the talent to run "your system" rather than the guys that may know it better but don't have the talent to run it

Most of mine are for the defense.

1) Improve the speed/athleticism of the RE's.

2) Stonger DT's, depth.

3) Back 7 need to tackle better

4) Faster DB's

5) Take care of the ball offensively.

Don't know who, but we need some staff changes... cough * cotton * cough...

Also maybe some glasses for TMART

Double sided tape for Receivers

Set of balls for EVERY defender

Maybe find out who operated on Adrian Peterson and have him "fix" our speed issues... LOL
I agree. The D coordinator needs to be fired. As DL coach the DL was bad, and this D stinks. NU has the cash, a top DC should be hired.
Bo Pelini is our defensive coordinator, I can assure you he is the one making all decisions and play calls on the defensive side of the ball, JP just has the title of defensive coordinator.
I know, but I don't want Bo fired. Graduation rate, Academic AAs, off field problems are all good. We just need D and special teams. I would like to see a great D coordinator hired, although I don't really want to see anyone fired.

I don't see any changes coming in the defensive scheme next year. Have to hope the the new kids are really ready to step up on the d-side of the ball.

Only thing that I can see on offense, is the line needs some body's that can give the starters a break, with out the mistakes right off the bat. It would also help that for every good play Taylor makes, he quits making the bad ones to even it out. I thought we played about as good a game as we could. Next year if the turn overs drop off a bunch, watch out. We left some points out there today.

GBR!!!

We need to put together a vicious defense.......and yea......offensive line needs to get down right nasty!
:yeah

The main thing Bo needs to do is blow up this defense. No one should be guaranteed anything coming into next season. You want to start...you earn your spot. The guys we have returning are very vulnerable to losing jobs. Why we don't see our "lock-down corners" like Charles Jackson and Mo Seisay on the field is frustrating. Can they be any worse than what we have out there? We turned Aaron Murray into a 5 TD performing Tony Dungy first round NFL QB pick! UGA had a 6th TD pass but their WR dropped it. Our defense is one of the worst in the country and continues to set records for yards given up in major games.

Next year is the year to turn things around. A lot of new defensive players have potential to play. If Bo does not return to a Blackshirts attacking style defense, next year may be his last. I have said all year that the lack of an aggressive attacking playing downhill type of defense has gotten us in this problem. Sure we can beat the Iowa's and the Minnesota's. But when you let teams like Wisky, UCLA, OSU, and UGA run it down your throat or allow the QB so much time to complete it downfield, then you deserve the garbage we are getting (same thing last year vs. Mich., NW, and SCar). Further you can't recruit to this system because top talent at DE and DT want to attack the QB and not play DE contain.

I hope Pelini can turn it around. Next year is the season...we better not see the likes of this defensive product ever again. It is unbearable to watch because a common fan can see the weaknesses most everytime. Is it just me, or did several others of you call an opponents big play before it happened this year? :boxosoap
I love an attacking D. It is great to the the opposing QB rushing and panicking.

Our defense is garbage all the way around. I'm not being a pessimist, just calling it how it is. I hope we find some answers on D next year, because I can't stand watching that pathetic crap.
Disagree. Do we have problems? Yes, but to make a blanket statement like this is just irresponsible.
Really??? Over 400 yards passing today by a nobody QB and there's no problem? . :koolaid2:
Guy has thrown for over 3000 yrds a season in the SEC, a record. If he comes out early is projected as a first round pick. Absolutely the best QB we have faced all year.

In a word defense. From the scheme to the talent to the DC. Folks talk about Bo calling the D and being the DC. If that is the case then free up Paps spot.

I liken our issue to that of Jason Garret with the Cowboys. Head coach and OC. There is talk he might be let go. He is stubborn and refuses to get an OC so he can concentrate on the "bigger" issues. Talk now of possibly have Jerry Jones bring in Norv Turner to be the OC. Let Jason know, this way or the highway. Bo might be at this cross roads now. You are kidding your self to think our D has made significant strides. Look out our losses this year. Look at the points scored and the yardage obtained. Embarrassing. IMO if Bo gets to stay, fine, but we need to bring in a quality DC who can fix this.

We also need to fix the little things I learned in 2nd grade when I started playing football. Things like holding onto the ball. Tackling. Listening in the huddle to the snap count. Blocking. Not getting boneheaded drive killing penalties.....................

If I had to describe teams under Bo, I would have to use words like undisciplined. Lost. Mistake prone etc..... These descriptions have been the hallmark since he has been here.

+1

I'm surprised how many people are ripping on the O-line after today. I thought they were dominant until Sirles got hurt and Rodriguez came in. We need more depth on the O-line, but I was surprised how well they held up today.

and it wasn't AR's blocking, it was the false starts too. You could feel the steam go out of the O.

I'm just very curious as to what wasn't to like about the scheme defensively today????

I thought it was a great scheme. I think we all get tired of Bo saying "we need to execute", but the fact of the matter is that he's speaking the damn truth. Our players have the hypothetical ability to execute just fine, but for some reason, and I have no idea what it is, they just fail to in the biggest moments.

There were so many times when we got pressure on the quarterback (yes, can you believe that? Our one-star two-bit washed up undersized defensive line got good pressure in the backfield!) only to have him barely slip out of our grasp, roll out and make a play.

There were so many times when we'd get solid stops on first down. Solid stops on second down. And something happened to let them convert on third down.

There were so many times when we would have nearly flawless, perfect coverage, only to have their receivers make plays and our defensivebacks not.

What I am tired of seeing is us get to the football and not tackling the guy in the backfield.

I loved the two gap we ran on running downs and how we let our guys get after the QB on passing plays.

Our undersized DL overacheived today 100%. Great job front seven.

The scheme requires too many things to go right to work. If you need 11 players to be perfect things will break down. The scheme needs to allow for some mistakes.
