Who should our next HC be?

I like what Deion is doing as a coach, but his sales pitch to good recruits at Jackson St is different (and more effective) than what he would be able to sell at Nebraska. At Jackson St he is able to sell a quality education at an HBCU with tight-knit community and a supportive environment for black players, which is very different than recruiting at a P5 school. Add in the cool flashiness of playing for Prime Time, and the availability of NIL money even at a lower division, and he has a recipe for recruiting success. I have a hard time seeing him be able to sell the same concepts at a school like Nebraska.

Yeah I see where you're going with that and I agree with the line of thinking. The timing isn't nearly as great with Aranda and Riley just having gotten settled into huge deals. Aranda is not going anywhere.

I really think we're going to largely be disappointed by who gets announced. A big part of this is expectations bumping into reality for some people, but also a byproduct on who is realistically get-able.

I think the biggest variables in the candidate are:

1. Projecting their level of energy & motivation to actually give 100% effort.

2. Helping them bring in the right coordinators - not just having them bring their guys from their small-medium sized operations they're running now.
No matter who is hired, there will be certain amount of the fanbase that complains.  It's just the way it is.

What people need to think about is look at your list of favorites, whomever it is.  Would've you been happy hiring that guy before he was at his current position doing well?  Say you want Aranda, would have you been happy hiring him before he was at Baylor?

Kalen Deboer and Billy Napier would also have been options last season.
Napier was most likely going to stay in the south, so his fit at Florida is natural.  Deboer has ties to the Midwest, so he could have been a better fit at NU and the Big Ten.

However, no matter what the coaching searches were like last year, the biggest obstacle was having the fan base united to fire Frost in the first place.  There was still a big divide on fans who wanted Frost to be kept around for a 5th season.

And yet when we hired whipple with a longer and less successful resume we had fans drooling over him.
IMO, he was a desperate hire, not even a fit for what Scott was doing. Mixing a spread offense with the WCO is laughable. I was pretty disappointed with the hire. I felt like it was throwing darts and hoping you hit something good. Nothing personal towards Whipple, just not really a good fit at all.

I don’t get that last line of thinking. Aranda’s record as a head coach at Baylor has boosted his resume, and added head coaching experience to his already strong experience as a Defensive Coordinator.

Dave Aranda is an absolute madman.

Here he is ( FOR 10 HOURS!!!!!) just sitting down with a coaches clinic in front of a whiteboard in a windowless room just going in on defensive schemes and ideas.

Would be my very first choice if I didn't think he has plans to take over the world in the next 5 years.

The idea of Deion Sanders in a recruit's living room in a farm house in the panhandle is inspiring
Hahaha Yeah, because the farm houses in the panhandle are loaded with 5 star recruits.

He’s Deion effin Sanders. He’s getting into any living room he wants to get in, anywhere in the country. And literally everything he can sell at Jackson State (minus the all black thing) he can sell at Nebraska x100.

You're right that Aranda is an interesting case there. Because two years ago, he was a guy that did not have "Power 5 head coaching experience." Arguably he was actually more like where Bo Pelini was in 2007ish - a really, really successful coordinator.

So if I'm being honest I probably wouldn't have been happy with him two years ago...but then he got Baylor to go 10-2 last year and now he looks golden.

DeBoer is still an option IMO. Personally I think he's a great one. A bit of a slim resume and the contract probably makes it tough but I really like him as a coach and as a fit for Nebraska. I think he would be coaching right now if we'd pulled the trigger at the end of last year.

Let my dream live!

So, would fans be happy with hiring a really good Defensive Coordinator that might be the next Aranda?

I think DeBoer's status at Washington will depend on whether UW can work out an invite into the Big Ten.  If he gets an idea that it's going to happen, then he might as well stay at UW, as they will be in the Big Ten in a couple years.

Then we give him a lab and someone named "pinky" and let him.

Yeah and what does throw the kitchen sink at them mean??? I know it involves money but does it include anything else??

Yes. These details may come as a bit unsavory but there are very specific clauses being written into Dave's contract about how his junk will be serviced to his satisfaction.

I get where you are coming from but I also get where BRB is coming from.  I think a better way to ask the question is would your favorite to be the next coach been your favorite 13 months ago?  So many people look at what is happening right now instead of looking at the body of work from a coach.  Aranda might be awesome.  I wouldn't be mad if we hired him but I don't feel any level of comfort because he has such little experience as a head coach.

I don't have one coach I would be crazy about but I would like us to hire someone who has shown he can recruit, then develop those recruits, and ultimately win at a high level with the players he recruited.  Hiring anyone without those 3 things becomes a gamble we shouldn't take imo.

I was referring specifically to the person posting with "#HireMeyer" in their signature line.  I've read most of the 200+ pages of this thread and know everyone has their dream hire.
Referring to that person’s list…

It sounds like we have a similar view.

Which coaches do you like?

I like the Bieniemy idea!  An experienced NFL guy would attract high level recruits and I would trust his ability to build a coaching staff that would develop pro-caliber athletes.  That's why I suggested hire Mickey's brother Vance to assist Mickey and build a program.

What are your thoughts on Bronco Mendenhal?
