I think you're overstating this a bit and the football factory mentality has been, is, and will remain a dirty reality of the game even at NU. What it does is effectively kill the walk-on program.  The ability to take flyers with a wide net and the opportunity for career long scout team players to enjoy a life inside the program.  Guys like Elliot Brown are gone from the program.  

But, any honest conversation has to begin with how we got here, and the truth is NU has used NIL & the walk-on program to circumvent scholarship limits.  They aren't alone, but they are among the most egregious.  When you blatantly jump through loop holes in plain sight, surprise, people take notice.  

I'm as nostalgic for the way things used to be as anybody, but in this era of NIL & the transfer portal, is it possible having all these extra bodies in the program is actually a detriment?

I’m under the impression that FCS school will need to be at 105.  I’m seeing conflicting info if D2 needs to be at 105.

DI & DII will both be covered under the roster limits.  I read that the average DI & FCS school has an average roster of 128 players, so this year is going to be a mess. There will be a lot of players going to DII or lower.  It will also affect HS recruiting in lower classes.  I'm guessing most Jr's at UNL will hang it up.  If we average 15 walk-ons per yr., which I think is on the high end you are looking at 30 players for 10 to 20 spots (fresh & so.).  I think some will try to make the team. We still have a approx 2 weeks before portal opens.

Yes I agree it is my chosen delusion and not reality. I’m sure that Nebraska has been honest with scholarship guys for a long time as to whether or not they should move on. 
 

I like your point about having more bodies being a detriment. It’s a give and take relationship, the value that was gained by finding gems through the walk on program may be offset by the fact that fewer bodies means more reps and more one on one coaching and fewer bodies in the weight room etc. Time will tell.

There are lots of teams that has walk-ons.  It's not a NE think.  The average roster size in DI is 126 players.  Things will continue to change as profit sharing also starts.  I think this hurts players more as there will be msny players going down to the lower classes.

I guess this is the NCAA trying to flex, but this is horrible this is for all players- men’s sports anyway. Less roster spots =less opportunities.  And will it be safe for the rostered players?  Less depth means no practice squad and maybe more reason ton play hurt.

Teams like NU, Iowa, & Wisconsin have walk-on programs.  Most walk-ons around college football are practice fodder and 2nd class citizens.  They are far closer to Rudy than Luke Riemer outside of long snappers, kickers, and punters.  I believe it's Iowa where the walk-ons have a NIL deal that pays their tuition and then Rhule began using it to circumvent the scholarship limits and others followed suit a little more discretely.  You hit on a very interesting point and it's probably a huge driver of this as well, revenue sharing.  

NIL is pandora's box.  They legally can't address this by limiting NIL to scholarship players, so how could they possibly limit the looming revenue sharing to scholarship players?

If Raiola wants to keep the starting job in 2025, he needs to shed about 25 lbs and work on his agility and mobility. He can definitely throw the ball, but his inability to scramble has made him ineffective in many games.  He also needs to stop pretending to be Mahomes and celebrating first downs.  I definitely do not see him as a 5-star QB based upon his first season.

Are you serious?  Stop celebrating first downs?  SMH.  He doesn't need to loose weight and he will be our starter.  He needs to work on pocket presence and we really need to field two good tackles in '25 to help with that. I'd say he was pretty darn good for a true freshman.  The star ratings are all about projecting NFL likelihood and Dylan's is very high.  I'd love for Coach Holgorsen to hang around for at least another couple years.  As much as I bag on Rhule for certain assistant hires, bringing Holgo in was a great move.
