What do you guys look for in a media member covering the Huskers?

Honesty and insight. I'm usually not too interested in the official mouthpiece of the athletic department (Sipple, Shatel to some extent, etc.)
Pretty bad to characterize Shatel with Sipple. Shatel is no sunshine pumper whatsoever. He can be downright scathing when the situation calls for it.

Be professional: appear that you gaduated from an accredited college and are capable of asking an intelligent question.

PS. When we lose a game asking Bo what happened? Is not an intelligent question....

Crying cause you don't have access to practice is not professional. Next thing you know you have our offensive plays diagramed in the paper, didnt I see that last year??

Finally learn to be a fact-checker. I thought that was journalism 101. In todays world however, there is more mis-information out there cause hey, I can tweet what I read on "message boards". To hell with the truth.

Last week when Tom Brady went down, half the tweeters were saying he was done for the seaon....shame on those alleged professionals who had access to practice.

I think that every notable NU Football media member is professional, intelligent, and checks their facts. We really don't have any scum in our media, which is fantastic.

No, Dirk is not scum. We have no TJ Simers or Berry Tramels or Paul Finebaums here, and I'm thankful for that.

Honestly, I really don't give a hoot about any of these guy's opinions regarding our football team. What they think of Bo or the program or what have you. I don't care. I have my own opinion in those matters. All I want are tid bits of info and facts. Who's playing first team, recruits, players who have impressed. Consequently, services such as twitter are perfect for that. I don't care if any of these guys see's our team practice, really either. Just show up after practice and ask some basic questions. Good nough for me. The rest I can get from watching the games.

Definitely agree with this. We have an embarrassment of riches in local sports media. We're spoiled, and I hope everyone appreciates just how spoiled we are.

Agreed. The Nebraska sports writers are generally very good. I've spent time in Champaign, IL and Ann Arbor, MI, and the Journal Star and World Herald do better than either of those cities' papers.

Agree with tschu and knapplc. I think we have very good reporters in the area.

First, a question. Can anyone really blame Nebraska sportswriters for their frustrations? Look, everybody has a job to do, whatever that job may be - construction, business, insurance, journalism, etc. When a head coach becomes unnecessarily vindictive (which I believe Pelini can be childishly vindictive at times) it makes a journalist's job that much more difficult, by which all the Husker fans suffer for, not just the journalists.

Can you imagine Pelini in Joe Girardi's shoes right now and how much of a journalistic nightmare that situation would be? Pelini has yet, and probably will never, grasp the PR side of his job. I think most have accepted this won't change, but we have to draw the line somewhere. Cancelling media after practices, telling the media they're only allowed to talk to player x,y and z (which recently happened) is just ridiculous imho.

My attempt at a poor analogy - imagine your boss doesn't really care about your job, but you still have to put together a presentation for an important meeting. You ask your boss to give you important data only he has access too, and your boss gives you only a quarter of the data you need. And some of it isn't even what you asked for. To me, it's very similar to what Husker journalists deal with.

I know there are varying opinions on this, but I think when journalists suffer it's the public that suffers too. The quality of stories declines, the number of stories declines and journalists become frustrated. Reflect on your own professional career. Has frustration ever led to poor work or negative production? It's never really an excuse, but I can't blame them.

I don't think anyone blames the local media for being upset about their lack of access. What irks people is the griping and sniping about it publicly. Yeah, it's frustrating when your career depends on access to a team, but that kind of thing doesn't need to be aired so publicly, so often.

We just want some news. If there's no team access right now, we'll consume the kind of pre-season fluff we usually get instead. Right now, after 7.5 months of waiting, people are less picky about the articles they read. They know what's coming out - even if it contains quotes from players and coaches - is fluff.

I am a huge supporter of Pelini. But I don't care for his paranoia over media exposure. Most schools and coaches would love to have their fans show the zealous interest of Nebraska fans. But I get the impression that Pelini would prefer to have zero media coverage at all, except for game time during a dozen Saturday afternoons in the fall. To his credit, he does seem to be improving with the media when he actually allows them to talk to him and see the team. That is, he seems slightly less annoyed during interviews than he did three or four years ago. Slightly less.

Just dont be ole' Woody Paige and all is good.
Man...I lived in Denver for a couple of years, and I did study journalism and mass media for awhile. And for the life of me, I could never understand what Paige's writing style was supposed to be. It was like he was trying to be a quirky sports poet.

It was always pretty painful to try to decipher. It's sports, it should be pretty simple. Not Shakespeare.
