If he's asked for release/been told he's off the team, a player can call anyone he wants to look about leaving. Even after a player has been granted a release, coaches can call them.

Nothing was "grey" about Nebraska's dealings with Stringfellow.

He can be granted release of a scholarship before he leaves the campus. That's how transfers work.
