He's right. Since Harvey Pearlman was hired in 2001, we've seen Nebraska go from the top of the Collegiate (and Athletic) world, to a middle tier Big Ten school. We've been kicked out of the AAU. We've had a completely disfunctional athletic department for 12 years, have hired/fired/rehired/and fired all sorts of underlings. The last decade plus has been a constant struggle for progress and we've cleaned house three times now, and yet one variable remains...

If we're intent on cleaning house and fixing the problems, there's but one solution.

Osborne debunked Bo Pelini's lie that he was "forced out" of the Athletic Director position:

Do you think he would say anything different if it was actually true though? Tom was supposed to be around for a couple years originally. He ended up there for what...4 or 5? I wouldn't be surprised if he wasn't given a little shove towards the end...and frankly I don't have much of a problem w/ that if it happened. This whole idea that Tom is some divine Nebraskan, is BS. He was a great coach. Everything else since then has been judged completely based on that success.

My worst fear is Nebraska becoming the palce that used to be great but cant get back to the top. I fear we might be there now.

-Osborne retires with a perfect legacy even if it took a long long time.

-Solich replaces him but as Osbornes recruits vanish he struggles and is fired amid controversy.

-New direction is felt necessary, a guy named Bill comes in and changes everything to his liking and fails miserably save for recruiting. He too is fired.

-The next guy is a no nonsense defense minded hard a$$. After 7 long years he is fired after multiple controversies even though he compiled a respectable overall record.

-Mike Riley comes into a dangerous situation....

They've expended injuries, the schedule, bad luck, XII bias, Espn bias, adjustment to the big ten, Shawn Watson, Dan Beebe, mean defensive players who clap, Taylor Martinez, Tommy Armstrong, Stringfellow's mother, mean message board posters and athletic directors who greet the team with chocolates and a back rub for the coach.

So now it's the chancellor.

It's really sad and borderline pathetic.

i do not remember. i just always thought it was a temporary arrangement to clean house, stabilize, and move on.

just seemed like after that, it was just a matter of find the right permanent guy.

And I believe getting kicked out of the AAU wasn't something Harvey could control. So there's that.

In spite of the AAU politics, which was driven at least in part because the AAU doesn't count grant money from the USDA the same as money from the NIH -- UNMC's NIH grant money wouldn't count towards UNL, Nebraska's academic standing has increased from 2001 to 2014.

After Gene Stallings, Alabama went through 4 coaches in 10 years before Nick Saban rescued them.

I am not saying that Riley=Saban but sometimes it takes a while and a few coaching changes to get back on top once you've been knocked down.

Tom Osborne routinely told us that Saturday's game against Mother Mary the Blessed Southwest Tech was going to be "tough" and "they're a really good football team." And then we'd beat them 63-7. So the idea that Tom would exaggerate the truth or somehow stretch the truth to make his point isn't completely unbelievable.

However, that he might be stretching the truth in this instance isn't a good enough reason to ignore his words. It lends itself to tinfoil hats and bogeymen.
