Ignorance! Yay!!!

The reason they get pissed has to do with history. You call someone who's Korean Chinese and they're more than likely going to get pissed because it's not the same heritage, and they general don't care for each other. They fought a war against each other's ideals not that long ago. Same thing with Japanese and Chinese. It's fine to ask someone where they are from (culturally) or get their ethnicity confused, but if they have pride in it don't expect them to not correct you without a little attitude. If some Brit called you Canadian you'd probably give them some lip too.

I get what you are saying and want to tone down what i said earlier. It is all about context.

I think if someone is trying to get to know you and is asking from a place of "Hey, i want to learn" then i think jumping down their throat for a simple mistake is where i get frustrated.

Now, that being said, that guy might have dealt with far more than i realize in terms of being judged or people presuming things based on how he looks. He is an american, and is proud of that... I get that.

America is a mixing pot.

As a white male, i obviously have no idea what is is like to be any other race than what I am.

This all being said, if someone accuses me of being a Canadian, i will stab a b#tch... i aint no syrup sucker.

this is a good response I think, and you were the one that started with saying that doesn't sound like a person that you would like very much, which is why I don't get why I'm the one accused of being on a high horse. My only point is that people should have grace in situations like this - to not be offended if someone doesn't know better, and also to not be offended if someone tries to educate us on something.

Regardless Minnesota is basically Canadia anyways.

If ypu look like a mexican and youre offended by me asking you if youre hispanic, thats your problem, not mine

If you have slighlty slanted eyes and somewhat dark skin and youre offended by me askin you if youre of chinese decent, thats your problem not mine.

No. I dont need educated for asking some simple questions. And yes some people, like the one in the above story need to put the big boy pants on and quit bein such a self riteous b!^@h. Its that simple. Politcially correct or ethanolism or whatever you wanna call it, well, i just call it bein a baby. All these different ethnicities generally take so much damn pride in their heritage in this so called mixing pot, but yet....

My only point is that people should have grace in situations like this - to not be offended if someone doesn't know better, and also to not be offended if someone tries to educate us on something.
I find Count's version as an angry spewing of what LOMS just said here

My opinion is right with these 2, depending on the day and the mood I'm in. Call it ethnocentrism or politically correct or whatever, there is just way too many thin skinned people around these days. I'm not quite sure why that is...probably a ton of factors. I get words hurt and stuff, but in this situation where the lady is asking a question and maybe just mis-worded the phrase, is she seriously not getting a pass for that?

What kind of person doesn't allow for another person to make a mistake and just forget about it. I dunno, I guess I am just of the opinion that is someone mis-words something and its usually easy to find/hear the mistake I just let it go. Instead of letting it give me a reason to be an a$$.

However, sometimes I am irritated or touchy and it does make me want to be an a$$, does it make it right to be an a$$? No. Am I going to apologize? No probably not, because I don't think forgiveness always requires an apology first.

ramble off.....

For the record, I'm not drunk right now. A little hungover. But not drunk.
