Bingo. He had top 3 D's 3 years at LSU, and after a learning 2008 season, had #1 and #9 D's in 2009 and 2010. Once the talent started to fall off, so did the performance.

There are recruiting restrictions, maybe we can go the JUCO route like Callahan did to fix what he inherited from Frank

 
Yeah, I agree that the roster issues will take time. As the coaches acknowledged, we simply added an army of freshman LBs but it's not necessarily ideal. DE recruiting going back several years now, it's been an issue and it doesn't look like it's being addressed effectively currently. If players step up it will negate some of this, but if not...it'll be a few years.

Granted, we don't know if Riley is going to leave a well recruited, well managed roster in a few years either, or if he'll fail and it will be littered with its own deficiencies. Then again, Callahan's roster management was criticized for reasons like over-reliance on JUCOs, but he had (or had good reason to, at least) to go that route with what he was given. So the effects can last for years.

However, disagree that Pelini is not a good defensive coach. His terrible results here had a lot to do with how he was able to hold up as a HC in the spotlight. When we fire a coach we tend to get into hyperbole about his ability and it's often unwarranted.

Good talent can make a poor coach look good, happens all the time. Poor talent takes time to weed out and replace

It's not elite top 10 talent, but it sure as hell isn't 114 in the country.

Exactly. A lot of people were fans of Bo's defensive coaching. Bret Bielema, Jim Tressel, Brady Hoke, Gary Anderson to name just a few...

Then why does he dominate the list of worst defensive games in Nebraska football history. Coz is down the list. The stats clearly show he was a better coach at Nebraska. The results were not good but he was a step up from the Genius that forgot how to stop the run.

 
Have patience, Banker and Riley will get us out of this mess, it will just take a couple of recruiting classes. Hip, Hip Hooray!

This. I think you can leave the LB mess on Pelini's doorstep, and some the the DE issues, but the secondary/pass D? All on the current guys.

 
Freedom was always going to be a DE...even his HS coach said it was his "real" position. The old staff told him when he wanted to hear to make sure he signed...Just like this staff should have done with Fant.
