Spring Position Battles - Quarterback

Frankly, compared to most years that I remember paying close attention, there is virtually NO NEWS coming out of spring ball. Hardly any articles discussing the play or plays of individual players or units vs other units, etc. We are seeing and hearing nothing really. I live far away and don't get to read the Lincoln or Omaha papers of course but I check the articles and there seems to be almost nothing. We are past half way through spring ball and NOTHING tangible. Rather odd. Perhaps it is Riley keepingthe lid on things to avoid (he wishes) the typical wild speculation and rumors and controversy such as how POB is outgunning TA or the RBs all seem to have fumbleitis. LOL

Perhaps we should just assume we are playing so extremely well there is simply nothing to discuss. All perfect. ????
The press have been allowed to attend half of the practices and there have been several stories with their impressions, many of which have been posted in various threads here. Overall not a lot of drama. At QB TA is clearly the #1 and has really good sessions, but he still has moments where he forces the ball and Langs has been really pushing him hard on being a better decision maker; overall impression of TA has been decent though it seems and POB seems to have the potential, but has some development to do.
On Oline, the young pups are pushing for jobs on the interior, and that would be a good thing IMO. Big ? at RT, Knevel needs to prove he is the guy.

At IB, we have heard the most about Wilbon and Ozigbo, but Newby stills seems to be up there as well as #1 back, even if just barely.

WRs seem to be having a good Spring, but soft tissue injuries have started to recently spring up again.

Dline has gotten good reviews for the interior line play, DT seems to be a strength this year. McMullen sliding inside was a good move and Parrella has been pushing him hard to get the most out of GM. DE is still a ?, but Freedom has been pretty good and may be ready to be an impact player. Lots of potential otherwise that needs to be realized behind him and at other DE spot.

LBs and DBs having a pretty good Spring overall. CBs, especially Kalu, standing out.

LJS Spring Practice Questions

1. Can Tommy Armstrong make continued steps in playing, as offensive coordinator Danny Langsdorf described it earlier this spring, “an efficient game?” The offensive coordinator said “He's got to be able to make the throws we want him to make and not do too much.” We’ll refrain from playing expert on Armstrong’s progress after a few practices open to the media. But it's also understood that the Spring Game, while being just one of 15 practices, has a way of shaping conversation for the next few months around here. Armstrong could use a particularly efficient, turnover-free day April 16.
5. Do we see Patrick O’Brien start to get worked in with the top units? Understand, that wouldn’t mean he’s going to the front of the quarterback race. But it could signal the next step for his chance to make a run for the backup role. Langsdorf has liked how O’Brien transitioned, but so far, the true freshman’s work has been with the lower units. “We're early, so we've got a long ways to go,” Langsdorf said after the first week, “but we've got to get him running with some of the better groups.”

Why not have Bush change positions? He is 6'3" 220 lbs and runs like a deer. He will probably never take another snap at QB.
If everybody stays relatively healthy, I suspect you are right, but given that Darlington has been moved to WR and POB is still largely unproven, we don't have much depth at QB.

He feels like he's become somewhat of a forgotten commodity, even with Darlington making a position change. But, if POB ends up not being quite ready to play this fall and TO is the starter, Bush could very well be in a position to push Fyfe for the back-up spot. So, he isn't completely out of the running yet.

And unless I'm forgetting someone, if POB does redshirt this year AND Bush were to change positions, that QB depth becomes awfully thin.

We are thin at the QB spot in my view with only TA, Fyke, Bush and POB and a transfer guy (I forgoet name) coming in the fall I recall. At this point, we certainly can't be said to be loaded. We would hate to move Bush to Safety (assuming he is fast and quick enough which I doubt?) and then see Tommy get injured, leaving us with Fyke and a green probable redshirt candidate POB). We could have two QBs get hurt in the first game - it happens - and a third go down in week three. At that point, we are installing a back up safety as a back up QB. We should keep no less than 5 QBs on the roster all with the ability to run the offense at a basic (Matt Turman for example) level.
