f#*k

My wife and kids went to York after I posted that.  On the way back some douche does an illegall U turn into.our lane as we turn right.  Then not 2 minutes later an Ambulance comes up behind the 2 lane we are in.  Get over and let it by, some prick comes barrelling through everyone to get to the head of the pack.  f#&%ing people.

If you’re backing out of a parking spot I think you should look at the backup camera view to make sure no kids or other small critters are around, look behind left and left side mirror,  look behind right and right side mirror, glance again for small critters with backup camera and then pull out. There are a lot of stupid people so it wouldn’t surprise me that some people only use the backup camera view and don’t bother to turn their head. As @desertshox said, the view on the backup camera is too narrow to show approaching cars. It would be worse than only checking the rear view mirror.  I’m not sure what “didn’t register on backup camera” actually means but it makes me think the guy believes he has a magical backup camera that doesn’t require safe driving practices.

Yeah, for a lot of people, instead of it being an additional safety feature, they use it as a crutch.

There are plenty of people who don't look over their shoulder when changing lanes, so I'm sure there are a lot that don't look at anything but the camera.

I drove a rental Subaru recently which detected cars on the side which lit an orange light on the side view mirror. I thought it was pretty cool since people love to hang out in my blind spots. Then I thought well it’s also something not to rely on since the sensor could fail once and you could cause an accident. Also if they stopped working I’m cheap and probably wouldn’t fix them so really they should just be used as an extra indication. I have backup sensors on my truck that stopped working and I’ll probably never replace them.

My entry into this topic...  F my day.

husband authorized someone to replace our water heater without my knowledge - the installers just showed up and installed something.  I thought they were just coming to look at the old leaking one to diagnose it, and then we could do homework on new ones if needed.   :steam

Having to pay almost 2K for the experience when I know I could have gotten the job done by others cheaper, and been allowed to choose the model (better, or cheaper, or both), installers, etc.

While waiting for the overpriced experience, I encountered a spider so large, that it actually made noise when it moved, and it moved freakishly FAST

And now having a dog who just won’t stop panting today, first from the excitement of overpriced visitors and package deliveries, then from the heat, and now from a system of thunderstorms that aren’t supposed to end for another 4 hours.

Side note: I don’t have a backup camera so I don’t know how good they are. I was driving perpendicular to him. Is it a good idea to rely solely on the camera when cars are going left to right behind you?
People should 100% still use their eyes to look behind them, to the left and then right when backing out, instead of solely relying on the camera. The driver manual in the Subaru I bought last year even has it written inside.

To your question, the cameras are objectively good, but they often have a sort of fish eye nature to them. Everything directly behind the car is in a normal perspective, but things to either side are often warped. I would say anything beyond 15-20 feet to either side of the reverse camera can sometimes be difficult to spot right away. Shifts in lighting can also impact the visibility.

So, to this guy's point, even somebody driving at a responsible parking lot speed may not show up on a reverse camera until it's too late, so it was an asshat comment on his part.

I don't have a rear view camera.  Even if I did when I have a van on one side of me and a big pick up on the other side of me I can't see s#!t until I'm half way out anyway.

I used to drive a sports car and had the same problem.  I installed a navigation system in the car and added the backup camera option specifically because of this problem.  Now I drive a truck and block other people's view :D   My first thought about @Moiraine story was that the other driver's only view was with the backup camera.  While backing up @Moiraine suddenly appeared and he had to brake.  @Moiraine might have been driving at a reasonable speed but was in that awkward spot where if she had braked she would have came to a stop directly behind the guy backing up.  In that case it was better to speed up and get out of the way.  When I drove the sports car I figured out that the best thing to do was to back up slowly.   Anyone passing behind me would have time to either stop and let me back out or if they were in the awkward position they could continue past.  I wouldn't hit anyone caught in the awkward position because I was backing out slow and would have time to stop.  Despite this there were several times when I had to brake suddenly.  Due to the speed of the other vehicle or how far I had backed up before needing to brake I might get pissed off at the other driver because it was clear that either

a) they were driving too fast or weren't paying attention in situations where they should have stopped and yielded to me.

b) they were driving at a reasonable speed, saw me backing up but decided they were more important and tried to push through.

When I drive through a parking lot I assume that at any time someone's rear end will suddenly appear while backing out and that the other driver cannot see me.  Because I'm driving slow enough and always looking for people backing up,  I have time once I see them to either brake and yield or if too close I can safely pass without a close call.  IPDE method.

Ya, I sped up to avoid him. Maybe that's why he thought I was going fast.

Oh for f#cks sake  :bang  we know how to Google a f#ckin recipe. Whose benefit are all these stupid threads for?

Here's a site I like to post at www.huskerboard.com
