The P&R Plague Thread (Covid-19)

You guys realize many of the same media people calling Trump and others bigoted and racist for calling it a Chinese virus, or the wuhan virus, referred to it as that before Trump ever said it?...

Be that as it may (and that is true), I doubt they had the teleprompter saying "corona virus" or "covid 19" and then switched it to say intentionally and specifically say "chinese virus" instead.

He did not shut it off. He did place restrictions on MOST foreign nationals who were in China in the last 14 days on January 31st. There are quite a few exceptions to kids, parents gaurdians, spouses etc. of US citizens; certain visa holders; asylum seekers; etc.

So...on January 31st, he supposedly knew the virus was serious enough to partially shut down travel from china.  On February 28th, he was calling it a Democrat hoax.

yep....he was taking it seriously.

Really?  I have not heard this yet but thanks for the update!

Co-worker just came in my office about 20 minutes ago and said that a student had traveled to Italy earlier this year and has, of today, tested positive.  She was upset because said student was in her child's class.  Which of course means she's probably been exposed, as have I and my kids.  Which, if that transitive property is true on how easy it is to spread the virus, Bellevue has now been exposed.

I hate Twitter.

WTF does that second Tweet even mean????
There's a new study indicating measures to reduce covid-19 spread are working, which contradicts an earlier article suggesting an end to lockdowns and social distancing.

The abstract in the linked study will give you the details.

The numbers have to be inflated :dunno ...this outbreak has been going on since the first of the year, and here are today's figures, from CNN:

Dang. Luckily, for kids & teachers, those most affected by this are far older. Hopefully it's not much more than an inconvenience for everyone at the schools, but for those kids' parents and grandparents, or anyone with underlying medical issues... Hoo boy.

Not a fan of that temperature data meaning anything. Temperature alone doesn't tell us much and they only have 1 million thermometers online and let's be real, how many people have an internet connected thermometer? Obviously 1 million people do but most don't. Also that is a bit of a correlation isn't causation problem

Dang...well...if that is all true and I assume it is...I would think Elk Public School will be closing up here shortly...Are they are spring break next week?

This is another fake outrage from a bunch of fake reporters that are acting like petulant children, and Trump knows they make themselves look stupid when they flail around in their reaction to him saying it.

Glad to see y'all took the bait... smdh
Then by all means call out the media people who were saying it but don't pretend it makes what Trump did any better.

Not only are the UNMC numbers NOT inflated, they're a best-case scenario.

480,000 deaths out of 96 million infected is about  .5%, as they're saying.

The numbers you're posting here - 4,000 deaths out of 113,000 infected, are about 3%.

If we approach 3% deaths, that's upwards of 2 million people dead out of 96 million infected.

i get that your math is correct knapp...but did someone misplace a decimal point somewhere? how is UNMC getting to 96 MILLION cases in the US when there have only been 113 THOUSAND cases worldwide thus far...?

The last few days I've just been dreading what this is going to look like when it explodes in Africa.

Now I know what @knapplc felt like when idiots like me wouldn't listen.
Whether we believed it before or now, it's still just going to suck for everyone. And what's worrying me is we really still don't know how bad thus is going to be.

Oddly, a lot of places in Africa are ahead of ilus in how to deal with this because of multiple previous outbreaks like Ebola.

Because that's how pandemics spread. We have instituted zero safety controls, no travel restrictions - we aren't even testing people like other countries.

There are people with this virus among us right now. They're going to stores, using touch pad devices that others are using, touching door knobs, shaking hands.  There are no controls over anything. You have to ask yourself, why wouldn't it spread? And if it's spreading, and we don't even have the ability to test people, why would those infected not keep going out in public, going to work, interacting with others?

The people putting these numbers out aren't trying to scare us, they're trying to educate. They're doing their best to mitigate the situation in spite of zero help from the feds.

This is likely to get way, way worse before it gets any better.

We just had several cases confirmed here in Iowa about 30 minutes ago. 8 right now with another 10 pending results and there are 22 Iowans on the cruise ship in Cali.

Not to mention that I have white sheets for my bed, but some pretty awful people use white sheets for entirely different reasons.
