Tangent Thread - P&R Edition

Here is him treating Ebola patients within the past 5 years....

No no no. This a picture of Coach Verduzco right before entering the QB room to go over film. He forgot his glasses and cigar and will have to start all over.

If this is Fauci, then the person to the upper left hand side in the window is Chines double agent Ling Chow. Here is the double-agent's dossier file photo.

People keep forgetting that Dr. Fauci and the epidemiologists have been right about the coronavirus more often than they've been wrong, and far more often than the folks who claimed hoax, claimed it would disappear after about 15 deaths, claimed hydroxychloroquine was a ready-made cure, claimed it was a Bill Gates conspiracy, and touted America as ready for a full re-opening.

The issue about mask wearing has been addressed plenty of times, and Fauci along with virtually every reputable healthcare professional has been on the same page since April.

84HuskerLaw is wrong about so many things, but he is right about Donald Trump listening to the wrong advisors. Can you believe he retweeted the Houston pediatrician who believes in the spread of demon sperm and alien DNA -- and that hydroxychloroquine and zinc will eliminate the need for facemasks?

Speaking of facemasks, that's a football term and this is a football thread. Now that I've said my peace, can the rest of you please keep politics out of this?

I'm curious on others thoughts on this board....if Covid-19 was killing kids at the rate of older citizens - would you then be mad that Trump calls this the Chinese Virus? I truly believe we would already be in a World War with them if that was the case and way more people would be on board.

No, I am not saying he is right for saying this at this time or we should be at war - I just feel since it isn't kids then people kind of let a lot of things slide.

Wha?

UK, Spain, France, Brazil, Belgium, Italy, Sweden, Peru, Chile all have more deaths than the USA per 1M residents.

That's not counting some countries who have the population of Lincoln, NE

First, as already mentioned Brazil has fewer deaths per 1m than the US. But yeah, they have an incompetent leader too.

Second, the UK's leadership is also incompetent (although not as incompetent as Trump)

Third, cherry picking data is a bad way to make an argument. Sure, if we compare overall deaths the US looks alright. Not great, but we're not the worst. But is it a fair comparison to make, when we're only now seeing the worst of our COVID-19 deaths while these countries are past their spikes?

Maybe a better comparison would be 14 day averages. Let's look into that and see how we compare.

I couldn't easily find a 14 day cumulative number of deaths for the US, so I had to do my own calculation. Feel free to check my math using the sources below.

How to calculate deaths per 100k:

(Death / Total population) * 100000

US deaths per 100k Jul16-Jul29: 4.0

(12276 deaths / 308401808 citizens) * 100000 = 3.98 (Rounding up gives us 4.0)

  • UK: 1.4
  • Spain: 0.0
  • Italy: 0.2
  • France: 0.3
  • Sweden: 1.5

There is not a single EU country that is even remotely close to our current deaths/100k, and it is because of this we are most likely not going to have college football.

1. Did Fauci in the beginning say Masks will not help?

No, he didn't say that. Context is important.

“When it comes to preventing coronavirus, public health officials have been clear: Healthy people do not need to wear a face mask to protect themselves from COVID-19,” CBS News reported March 8, concerning the Fauci interview.

This statement is still, to this day, accurate. The masks we (the public, not healthcare workers) wear are not intended protect the wearer, they protect people around those wearing masks. As early as February health experts were recommending people feeling sick should wear them:

What experts do agree on is that wearing a mask is a good idea if you are sick, so you can reduce the chances that you'll infect others, whether it's family members at home or people at the doctor's office if you go in to be seen. Perl says that wearing a mask when sick is especially a good idea if you live with someone whose immune system is compromised or who's elderly, since people in their 60s and above seem to be the most vulnerable to COVID-19.

Ok, back to your "FAUCI SAID MASKS DON'T HELP" nonsense.

“While masks may block some droplets, Fauci said, they do not provide the level of protection people think they do,”

Again, still accurate today.

"And often, there are unintended consequences; people keep fiddling with the mask and they keep touching their face."

Here we get to our first instance where current knowledge has evolved.

“It could lead to a shortage of masks for the people who really need it,”

How quickly people forget how hard it was to get PPE to hospitals. I can't be the only one that remembers health professionals talking about re-using masks due to the shortage.

Importantly, it's not like he said "LOL don't wear masks" and changed his mind yesterday. The 60 mins interview was March 3, the CDC updated guidance on April 3.

By April 3, the CDC issued guidance advising cloth face mask coverings for the general population.

“CDC continues to study the spread and effects of the novel coronavirus across the United States,” the guidance said. “We now know from recent studies that a significant portion of individuals with coronavirus lack symptoms (‘asymptomatic’) and that even those who eventually develop symptoms (‘pre-symptomatic’) can transmit the virus to others before showing symptoms. This means that the virus can spread between people interacting in close proximity—for example, speaking, coughing, or sneezing—even if those people are not exhibiting symptoms.”

Two important takeaways from this April CDC guidance update:

  1. They learned new information about asymptomatic spread
  2. Everyone needs to wear a mask now

Hindsight is 20/20, but it doesn't mean what Fauci says today should be ignored.

Note: I'm only using this source for the direct quotes (easier than trying to quote a 60 minutes recording). The purpose of the article is clearly to get people to distrust information from a reliable source. Something we see a lot of in this thread.

I liken it to a seatbelt. People were getting killed on highways needlessly. The seatbelt law became the standard. Easy thing to do, and allowed us to continue getting placed faster. Much preferable than making the speed limit 15 mph.
In my opinion it’s not the best analogy.

If you don’t wear a seatbelt, the only person you endanger is yourself.

If you don’t wear a mask, you endanger everyone around you.

It’s more like walking around with your finger on the trigger of a loaded weapon, with the safety off, and pointing it at everyone you pass.

I really want to reply to this long and cherry picked information. But I am not due to popular demand that we discuss football not politics. So thank you for all the research for nothing.

But good news a pessimist just saw the light. Maybe hilltop inspired him

That’s a weird way to admit you have no way to back up your claim.

PS: All I did was Google “Fauci mask March” and realize the first result had everything I needed. It doesn’t take much effort to debunk your delusions.

Apparently you missed like 10 pages of mods and good citizens of huskerboard pleading to stop politics. So I could indulge my inclination to respond to your post. But then down the rabbit hole we go for another couple pages.

That story came out right before the Marlins story broke. Finebaum, if you listened to him today on his show and his opinion on ESPN the past two mornings is not as optimistic.
Huskerboard- Will there be a 2020 season.

Its where i go to catch up on the latest depressing news and insights.

My new goal for the week is to find some positive news no one can rain on

Reality sucks, but it doesn’t do any good to hide from it.

You want football? Ignoring bad news and hoping for the best is about as effective as HCL is for treating COVID-19.

Accept the horribleness and be a force of change.

Get out your eye goggles folks. If you want football start wearing eye goggles. Fauci says we might reach a point we need to wear eye goggles. :)   :)   :)

It's amazing the number of people who forget this is happening all over the world, involving governments having nothing to do with our particular two party system.

You know what else they have all over the world? Sports. And that got me thinking:

Will there be a 2020 football season?

Discuss.
Nooo...the reason Australia is mandating masks is because all those Aussie-Trumpers!
