Next time you get yourself a couple bucks Teach (or run a fake field trip for your students) you can order Portillo's kits from a place called Taste of Chicago (along with Lou Malnatti's, Vienna Beef hot dogs, etc.)  It's certainly pricey but worth it if you absolutely need a fix.  I had a buddy of mine that was a diehard White Sox fan from Chicago and he used to do a big spread of Chicago eats for opening day for MLB and also again if the White Sox made the playoffs.  Man, that was awesome.  It almost made it worth it to suffer through Hawk Harrelson.  Almost.

Yeah, my buddy did it once and said they turned out pretty freaking good!

I learned how to cook from Gordon Ramsay and Alton Brown.  I never learned recipes really, just a bunch of techniques and now I can put them together and do things.  Taking a 3 hour course on food science at UNL helped too.

When I hear Pioneer Woman I think of a mound of sour cream and 1500 calories per serving.

This is pretty solid advice.

I learned how to make pan seared ahi tuna steaks and rice pilaf with a couple very simple online recipes. I've made it a handful of times and my girlfriend now believes I'm some marvelous chef when I am clearly also a hack.

To my credit, I can crack and open an egg with one hand. She also loves my omelettes.

When I hear Pioneer Woman, I think of the guy that won Food Network Star, but lost his job because he talked about "going in her back door" on a message board years beforehand.

Random thought: What’s an extremely controversial political or societal opinion that you hold? Figured if I put this here anywhere people would have gotten nominated anyway. 
 

I was thinking of the Harvey UpDike death (not him in particular with this take) and it sparked my thought on this. My take: Sometimes society is best off without certain people existing or if certain people would stop existing.

Last time I was in Chicago a couple years ago I went to Al’s #1 Beef because I had read that it was the best Italian beef place in the city. It was pretty good, but actually not as good as Lincoln’s own M&N Sandwich Shop’s Italian beef.

My god, M&N had the best sandwiches in the world, not just Italian beef but everything. To have such a gem right in Lincoln was a treasure. When Norm died, that was a huge loss for the city.

Do you still live in Lincoln and if so (I have always wondered this) does game day get annoying if you live in Lincoln?  Or do you not even really notice the extra traffic and people because you are there with them?

M&N was a treasure. Not even the building is there anymore. They tore it down and put up a Mr. Goodcents.
