Yeah, I mean "if it bleeds it leads" has been around journalism forever, and it didn't have anything to do with party politics.
Did the media over-react to the first legitimate global pandemic in our lifetimes? No. You could argue the MSM was late to the party. Once the bodies started piling up, the fringes were torn between conspiracy theories: total hoax or Chinese terrorism?
I'm guessing if a talking head on CNN had predicted half a million dead Americans last March, most of us would have considered that needlessly alarmist.
Did someone actually say other countries didn't make such a big deal about COVID? That's simply not true. Many made a much bigger deal about it. And even with the alarmist media, only now are we realizing COVID was likely much worse than we thought. Mexico has admitted the real fatalities are probably twice what's currently reported. Russia has likely under-reported fatalities by a factor of 4. I see no possible way that China's numbers are correct.
Strict lockdowns worked. Relaxed mandates spurred surges. Except in places where they didn't. Counties like Bangladesh, Pakistan and Nigeria should have been nightmares, but have remained relatively unscathed. There's still a lot to learn, a lot we don't know. The media reports that there's a lot we don't know, and some people don't like that.
Politically, my understanding is that as soon as Joe Biden was elected, COVID would magically disappear from the news because Democrats had been over-inflating it to undermine Trump. That really hasn't been the case, even with good vaccine news and improving numbers. I see the same call for caution along with potentially troubling developments. The liberal media hasn't exactly sheltered Gavin Newsom and Andrew Cuomo — they've been taking direct hits every night.
Outside of speculation, what has the media gotten factually wrong -- repeatedly wrong -- about the pandemic?

Not sure if you’re responding to my post, but I’ll answer from my perspective...
I don’t believe the media in general has been politically motivated or outright factually wrong throughout this. Best way I can describe my annoyance is that this morning I have 10 headlines in my news feed with ‘impending doom’ in the title. It’s dramatic language, but it is technically an accurate quote from an expert. On the other hand, is it all that informative or insightful? Why are those two words in the headline of every piece of coverage?
I found what I would think would be a bombshell of a story in the midst of the variant concerns (I linked it a few pages back), but I had to dig for it.
TL;DR: ‘If it bleeds, it leads’ annoys me.
With this research and some other research that’s recently come out on vaccine response, it’s looking like Dr. Fauci was a little late to the party and owes Rand Paul an apology. Read the abstracts then go back and watch the Fauci hearing and you will notice Fauci disagrees with Paul on much of this research that supports Senator Paul’s point of view.

Fauci was saying that because someone had the virus before doesn't necessarily mean you are immune to the variants that are spreading now. You might be but we don't know the that yet. The research on T-cells isn't complete yet either.
In fact there is evidence, especially coming from Brazil, who's leaders wrongfully assumed places like Manaus had reached herd immunity, that reinfection is very possible and concerning. Weighing that knowledge vs. how simple and painless it is to wear a mask Fauci doesn't owe your favorite dentist anything. Paul's simply whining over a small piece of fabric.

This is the perfect example of the problem: responsible scientists will tell you what they know, what they don't know, and what they would advise based on probabilities. Given an unprecedented pandemic, things change. They told you that up front.
People who know far less than our top epidemiologists will look for anomalies to prove how much smarter they are than the experts. Then they'll try to get you to do stupid stuff on their behalf.

Heh, that's a good read. What's in it for Berenson anyway? It seems like his followers would realize how inaccurate his claims are and he'd simply fall by the wayside. Don't people fact check anything on their own? Was his reporting this inaccurate when he was a reporter at the NY Times?
