Ads/board moderation

Mainly a topic for @BigRedMax.

A couple of items: first, I noticed that ads are now getting carried over into quoted responses, which makes deleting or changing things pretty difficult. I've included a screenshot below. Is there any sort of fix to this? (anecdotally, I also think this is causing a bad UX for our board members. Ads in the post itself feel a bit more intrusive than necessary, in my opinion).

Second (and this has been on my mind for some time): is there any way to limit the ad experience for a logged in moderator/admin? This is a more minor gripe, but having to hide multiple ads in order to use the moderator tooltip that pops up at the bottom of the board (i.e. when moving posts) is a bit cumbersome.

Thanks!

I edited my OP a bit and now I can't delete those large spaces without ads filling it in and removing the text when I try to delete them. Makes it un-editable.

@BigRedMax The ads in this screenshot (i.e. "Mosaic") are getting stickied in my browser and making it impossible to use the board moderator tool tip at the bottom of the screen. On Chrome. I tried to move 62 posts out of a football forum thread earlier and couldn't close out of the ads in order to access the tool tip.

A page refresh allowed me to temporarily access the mod tools but it was a cumbersome process and then the ads popped back up. Just wanted to make you aware of what I was experiencing and the challenges it was presenting.

I will ask our ad ops to look into it. I shut off the Infolinks that was causing problems.

If you see it again can you click on the ad and send me the URL?

@BigRedMax More of a curiosity question than a complaint: are video ads on site supposed to have their audio set to auto play and on?

I tried to grab a screenshot/clickthrough of the one I saw but it disappeared when I scrolled down to it. It was some video game ad with a streamer. I thought maybe I had a video playing in my background so it took me a little bit to realize it was one of the site ads.

No, there are not supposed to be any sound on ads. Some manage to get through. If you let me know the click through URL I can get it blocked.

@BigRedMax for some time there have been complaints about the board doing an automatic refresh of a page that makes it really hard for people to reply.  This mainly seems to happen on Apple devices.  I've noticed it on my iPad, but I don't use the board from there much.

Long story but I have an Android phone and have used Chrome ever since it came out.  But for whatever reason, Chrome started running really slowly on my phone (all web pages, not just HuskerBoard).  So I went looking for something different and downloaded Opera.  I didn't realize it but Opera apparently has a built-in ad blocker.  So now I am constantly getting the "disable ad blocker" notifications from the Admiral software that is running on the board.  It is relentless as I often have to click through it (which takes several clicks) multiple times before it lets me through.  That gets me by for awhile but then it comes back and does the same thing again, even in the same browsing session.

But the thing that caught my eye is that it looks to be refreshing the page every time I click through the ad blocker warning.  Which makes me think that may be the same thing that is causing the auto-refresh on Apple devices even though they aren't reporting seeing those warnings.  Perhaps it is running in the background and refreshes the page each time the check is run.

I was curious if we could shut that part off for awhile and see if it cures the auto-refresh issue.  If it does, then you can decide how you want to handle it.

Let me share this with Admiral who is the ad blocking company. I will also share the refresh thread with our ad agency. They may be responsible.

This has come up again in Board Feedback.  I still think it's probably too much of a coincidence that it only started when the ads were embedded.  It's almost like they want the page to refresh so the ads load again.

I was on my phone quite a bit over the weekend and gave up on posting a few things because I couldn't type everything in fast enough before the page refreshed and I lost everything I had typed.

Would it be possible to shut the ads of for even a day or two to see if that's what is causing the issue?  Or is there too much code in too many places to do that?

I was having the same problem on the HuskerMax forum. We believe we have isolated it down to the video player in the right rail and I have removed it until they troubleshoot it.
