End of Walk-ons Coming Soon?

Beat this up, but I think Rhule and company have been pretty creative about finding ways around rules.

Can a coach suit up and practice?  What would prevent a school from hiring on field practice coaches for the meat squad.  Pay em.  If one of them pans out, get them on the 110.

We have 30 on field practice coaches that work "in the trenches" with the team. :)

I think you'll see a group of students become practice players, most basketball and volleyball programs have enrolled students be practice players for the team, I'm sure there will be ways to entice students to do it for football as well.

Basically for all sports there are now roster caps and schools can choose to fund scholarships up to the roster limit.  And all scholarships are subject to Title IX equivalency.

On one hand it seems that more athletes will be getting full rides in all sports.  On the other hand you have to wonder if schools will cut non-revenue producing sports because the schools don't want to put forth money for scholarships needed in order to be competitive.

It sure appears to me that this makes Title IX even harder to not violate with football getting 20 more scholarships.

At NU, men's football and baseball will be getting 40ish more scholarships (or at least I hope we fund baseball to the cap).

Assuming we fund volleyball, soccer, and softball to the full cap, we will be getting into that 40 range for for those 3 sports.

I am not sure what this mean's for tennis, golf, etc.  I have a hard time believing we will be giving much more scholarships in those sports than we do now.

Without Walk-Ons, the sport will be missing many great stories  and a few very good movies also

The worrying part of expanded scholarships is that schools that have a lot of talent - Ohio State, Alabama, Georgia, etc. - may be able to just hoard even more. What few blue chip players filter out of the top 15 schools may decide to attend football factories instead.

I hope this doesn't contribute even more to the unequal distribution of football talent in the sport that suffers greatly from inequality.

Ive read that the new roster/scholarship rules are the foundation for revenue sharing. Very few teams generate actual revenue so I’m not sure how that will work or how revenue is defined.  I’m  sure that making NIL money for transparent is also a goal.

In general,  I feel fewer available roster spots is bad for players as it limits opportunities. In baseball, we’re  going to see more talent at the lower divisions with Juco’s upping their game as pipeline  developers.  More so than now.

Callahan's sources are saying that Iowa will only fund 85 scholarships and still have 20 walkons.  And Wisconsin will only fund 95 scholarships and have 10 walkons.

If that is the case then they are not serious about being winning programs in the new version of college football.  (Some might say that Iowa wasn't serious about winning with the offenses they have trotted out the last decade.)

With NIL, the scholarship numbers don't really matter as others have mentioned.  I think they'll continue on as they have.

There's now going to be a roster limit, which will impact walkons. Rhule mentioned Nebraska having 145 players currently and will need to reduce that down, which is obviously going to be the walkons.

I honestly think it’s weird there are that many walk ons. Why wouldn’t they try a different division? School is crazy expensive now.
Many of the guys want to represent their state, which they are proud of and dream of playing on. Rhule is big on development and wants as many guys who are  passionte about the program to have a chance to represent the N. A good example of this is Elliot Brown the wide receiver. He won't play at all but he has been from all accounts a fantastic culture guy who is working his tail off to make the team better. Some of the walk-ons will do everything they can to make the program better and they should be able to have that opportunity. Especially with Nebraska having a storied walk-on program.

With the new rules, most walk-ons will have to play down a division at an FCS or D-2 school. The tricky part is if programs can have practice players or guys who can take over a spot in the 105 roster if someone on the team gets hurt for the season. It wouldn't be many guys but I could see something like this happening.

The why isn’t lost on me. But I feel they should think more about the debt they’re incurring; but in general college students don’t do that. On the other hand, I once saw our 7th string RB score a date within like 10 minutes because he had his player tag on his backpack. So I suppose there might be enough perks.

There's no limit on coaches, just make them all "student managers".
