What did we learn UNI edition

Carter Nelson was our leading receiver in both receptions and yards.  He played just 8 snaps.

Nice that we're getting him the ball when he's out there.

Not as nice for the other receivers playing 20+ snaps and not producing much.

Didn't love what I saw from tackling and the gains that they had but the defense was able to shut them down once they reached the NU side of the field.
Same - the tackling wasn't great and they also struggled with some of the run fits. Some of that's a credit to UNI just being a well-coached team, though.

Something I've had to change from a mindset perspective in recent years is what to really expect from a "good defense" and what stats highlight success. Growing up in the 90's and 2000's, I always associated good defense with limiting points AND yards, but now I think it's really more about the points because of how much offenses have developed and how the rules have shifted to favor offenses. It was annoying to watch UNI chunk out yards in the run game but overall a big success keeping them out of the end zone all game.

The second pass was one that I thought he could have stepped into more.  Watching it again, he didn't have much room to do that.

A couple of them are good to be throwing off his back foot, like the fourth one.

The first TD throw could have been driven in there more, but on target is good.

The deep out route late in the half needs to have more on it.  Same with the back shoulder fade a couple of plays later.  And the in route the next play.

And i've always have said I am the second coming of Nostradamus and a better line predictor than Vegas.

Yeah, all the complaining got to me this morning.  I don't know why I chose to take it out on you.  Especially since your complaints were probably some of the mildest.  That's my bad.

I learned that posters in the game thread didn't know the difference between NIU and UNI, but in this thread everyone has correctly used UNI.

As for the team, I learned we can beat a team by 30+ points even when we don't play our best. And people will still complain about Satt.

The two throws near the goal line needed more on them.

Probably could have gotten the INT more out in front where only Lloyd could get to it.

It's awesome that he can make a ton of throws off balance.  And most of them are very good.  But those windows will be getting smaller as the season goes along.  And as his career goes along.

I learned that E. Johnson and Barney should be catching the ball more. The TE came up big for us a couple times as well. Don't think I learned much else. I think we'll learn a lot more about where we stand when we play Illinois next Friday.

Not to get nitpicky but Lloyd had more yards, nevertheless what Nelson achieved in limited snaps is pretty amazing.

Yep! If we get really good at setting up screens or utilizing drag routes,  it could be really tough for defenders to deal w when they have to think deep ball threat and try to stuff the run.

Not nitpicky at all.  I was taking that from a HOL article.  But they were wrong and I wasn't thinking about Lloyd's long catch.   :thumbs

In the end, points are the ONLY thing that matters. But, low yards helps with that. But, offenses are very different now than back then.

Outside of UIN's first drive, the only other concern, the need to finish strong.

This is still only DR's third game as well.

Illinois is going to show us where the team really is a third of the way into the season.
