What did we learn UNI edition

It’s incredible. Line was 30.5 and we win by 31.

I would love to seriously see the behind the scenes on it. And, not some documentary.
Right???

And what is crazy is that back in the day it was just casino odds makers that created the lines.  Now I know they use math and stats, which is why the early season lines tend to be easier but still.  It is amazing.

Math teachers all across America when kids say "when am I ever gonna need this?", "when you are placing bets on teams to cover the spread".

We only ran 48 plays, so taking that into account the 423 yards and 34 points is actually pretty impressive. Definitely some things to clean up, but as many have said nice to be nit-picking a 31 point victory.

Anyone listen to the UNI coaches postgame conference? He obviously has earned better than this comparison with his career, but a lot of Scott Frost vibes.

  • Mad about penalties called, specifically holding. Said "they (Nebraska) were doing the same thing" and (paraphrasing this one) everybody is holding on every run play, and it comes down to the ref with the flag and "where he's from."
  • Said our running back was the problem (not sure which one he meant) - said Raiola is good, but the running back was the only real problem.

He mentioned the RB YAC, so that would be Rahmir or Emmett? I am not sure he realized that we played 4 RBs.

[*]"That game was winnable"

[*]Felt their OL is smaller but as strong and tough as our defensive front

Just not the typical "well we played tough, and that's a great team" you usually hear from opposing FCS or lower tier schools. They always have positives they take away, but he seemed legitimately pissed that they lost (probably why he's a great coach) and also capable of doing the same mental gymnastics I was doing while Frost was here turning blowouts into close losses and close losses into basically wins.

Willis Mcgahee and Keona Davis are going to be very good football players.  I know you hear reports from practice but over the years some of those reports fail to show results on the field.  Seeing them both play this week you can just tell they have "it"

Davis' body is impressive as a true freshman. Look out once he gets a few years into the S&C program.

That's funny to whine about the holding calls. Saying the game was winnable for them works just in the context of "anything could happen" but really nothing further than that.

They couldn't stop our chunk plays at all, and there wasn't possibly enough legitimately-missed holding calls to have given them any hope of actually winning even if several of those had been called back.

Their QB overthrowing the guy in the red zone was also admittedly a "what if" for them, but no sure thing that they get a touchdown on that drive anyway.

Tye Edwards, the Panthers' 6-foot-4, 230-pound running back who was averaging an FCS-best 157.5 yards per game, carried 10 times for 37 yards.” - ESPN

This makes me feel a little better about the “lack of run defense”

Another thing I noticed is that their QB ran more this game. He had 11 carries against us, but only a total of 5 in their previous 2 games.

Growing up in the 90's and 2000's, I always associated good defense with limiting points AND yards, but now I think it's really more about the points because of how much offenses have developed and how the rules have shifted to favor offenses.

Similarly, I'm pretty much over 'explosive plays' as a metric for offenses at this point. Spread offenses that are explosive between the 20s but stall in the red zone when there's no room the defense are dime a dozen these days. Red zone efficiency is a much more interesting stat IMO.

I am excited, because I want my kids to experience what it used to be like.

This team still has many flaws but it'd be ridiculous to say there's been no improvement. We've benefitted from a weak schedule so far but, if Frost were coaching, there's no way we're 3-0 right now. None. 2-1 at best.
