What did we learn UCLA edition

Also, everyone is talking about the offense. But, the defense was just as bad. I do not understand how the defense can look so good against OSU and so pathetic against UCLA.

Comments like this are getting old.

Some interesting stats from the game:

The Huskers came into the game ranked 128th out of 134 teams in red-zone scoring percentage (.719) and went just 3 for 4 in the red zone in this one. No reliable kicker has doomed us.  I get even more pi$$ed when Rhule and Co have a whole series on "Chasing 3".  How the hell do you roll that out, use this as some motivational mantra and have the inability to even reliably kick an extra point.  Or the KO return man loses yards by failing to simply take the fair catch.

After a Bruin three and out, the Huskers took over with 9:58 left. It took them 13 plays and 6:01 to go just 53 yards and score on a Dante Dowdell 1-yard run, but the offense wasted nearly 3 minutes on 8 snaps inside the 10-yard line. Then they missed the extra point as they cut the score to 27-20. Poor clock management and a lack of a sense of urgency didn’t seem to help the cause.  3 minutes.....3 minutes....Maybe this was the "3" Rhule was chasing.  No urgency.  No attention to detail.  Out coached and over whelmed.  No accountability.

Going into the contest, UCLA ranked 118th nationally in turnover margin at -7, averaging 1.7 turnovers a game. Nebraska was one of the better takeaway teams in the country, averaging 1.6 per game. So, Nebraska’s offense threw two picks, and the defense failed to create a takeaway even though Bruin QB Ethan Garbers was tied for the Big Ten lead in interceptions with nine in only six games. I'm no longer sold on White's D, while solid against the run, without the ability to get to oppossing QB's we make them look like Heisman winners.  Someone posted a stat in the game about when pressured, Garbers completing rate decreased into the 40% range IIRC.  But we did none of that.

Dante Dowdell led all rushers with 61 yards on 17 carries and scored on a four-yard run in the second quarter for his team-leading seventh touchdown of the season. Rahmir Johnson added 27 yards on just 3 carries and Emmett Johnson contributed 23 yards on 7 carries for a Husker rushing attack that netted 113 yards on 38 attempts.  For those like me that need a calculator to do the math that's 2.9/carry.....2.9.  Easy to see what Satt thought 4 per play was awesome.  Unsure if the toal yards accounted for sacks.  Based on the individual carries Dowdell was at 3-5, RJ at 9 and EJ at 3.2

One hoped that the second half would begin differently, but UCLA picked off Dylan Raiola on the first snap of the second half and returned it for a touchdown. The Bruins followed that up with a 3-play 58-yard scoring drive culminating with a 48-yard completion to go up 27-7, seemingly sealing the Huskers fate. But the Husker defense allowed UCLA just 14 more plays and 52 total yards the final twenty minutes allowing the offense multiple chance to stage a comeback.  Seems like time management, inability to execute and lack of a reliable kicked doomed NU.  Defense did poorly, but 52 yards in the final 20 minutes isn't bad.

UCLA scored 20 Points.

pick 6

our offense doesn’t score without 3 huge penalties.

We just want 6 wins.  We have an offense problem.
We have a problem with both. Offense is just a more glaring problem.

We had 2 yards in the first quarter. Yes, that’s a big problem for the offense. But the defense didn’t get off the field to get them the ball back.

I know everybody wants satt fired but my question is.  Why dues EVERY DAMN QUARTERBACK EVER have a career night when they play us?  Think about it. I so fing sick of it.
It’s because of our dumb as hell bend don’t break philosophy on defense. We are simply incapable of getting pressure on the qb and white doesn’t like sending more guys as much as he should. On the backend we play this soft cushion coverage that often means we have no one inbetween the qb and the wr.  This defense was constructed for the iowas and Wisconsin’s of the world, our strength is the interior line and run d.

we do not have an attacking mindset on defense. We do not have a guy that can single handily wreak havoc on the line. Opposing teams not only have plenty of time to go thru progressions but often these routes are open to the point where we might have 3 guys around the receiver yet none of them are within 2-3 yards when the ball is caught.

to compound matters, we have a limp af offense that goes 3 and out far too often and averages somewhere around 15 a game scoring wise. Any defense will get worn out when you’re constantly being hung out to dry by a brain dead OC, a qb who refuses to take the easy pass and a running game that is putrid

UCLA scored 20 Points.

Combined with special teams, this is the issue.  I get bummed just as much as anyone else, when the defense plays with limited pressure because our back 7 just can’t handle coverage for very long, but giving up 20 points should be a recipe for a win.

I learned that im done for the rest of the year.  I am just tired of this, just so dam tired of fixing mistakes only to highlight new ones.  Im tired of losing to teams we should stomp.  Im tired of the hype videos and dramatic media coverage.  Im so sorry to say but im also tired of Rhule coach speak.  I can give time to beat ranked teams, i can give time to beat the higher talented teams but what i cant give any more time for is this horses#!t that was put on the field yesterday.  I have better things to do with my time and energy than just piss it away every saturday and watch what is carted out there.  Maybe some are right, maybe we should of never came here.  Its not talent, its coaching.  How could bo do more with less.  Its coaching, plane and simple.

Well... yep... I feel quite similar, and I think we're in majority company wrt all that.. but lemme ask ya somethin'... this sh!t has been goin' on now for years and years here.. (the thing I want to ask):  What do we hope/pray to be done about it?  Seriously, we've had so many different styles of coaches come and go since Solich was heaved out... and a few that we should have probably kept... they're gone.  What do we do now as to The Ideal Fix For Nebraska?

You don't need a lot of 4 star and 5 star kids out of high school to win any more, it's all done through the portal. Kids don't want to come to your school cause you're mired in mediocrity?  Just pay them in the portal and they will come. And every year you have to start over and fork over the money to some new guys. Sad but true. You develop a winning program through recruiting but to a large extent you pay for it with NIL money. The new reality of Division I college athletics. You guys should have plenty of dough available to you. Get some people on staff who are good talent evaluators and give them the $ to go get the talent. And the AD has to launch the coaches who are not producing. Cold blooded bottom

line approach. Forget tradition and all that. Win and you're rewarded. Lose and you're gone. We'll see about Cignetti once all his JM talent goes through the system and the cupboard is bare BTW.

Our D is good enough to win 6.  Our O isn’t good enough to win 6 games.  I’d argue not even close.

We are sub 6 wins as far as special teams as well.

Goes in line with what some of you at the game said. He definitely looks rattled in the pocket at the moment.
This has me curious (and I was similarly curious about Dowdell a few games ago), do NIL agreements have playing time built into them?  I mean I understand that the narrative of benching DR would need to be managed in the post-presser, which MR would handle very well, but if you’re serious about winning why ride with DR struggling this mightily. Is it simply fear of him walking if he’s benched for a series?

This is the sad reality. I’ve been an absolute diehard my whole life but this is the first it just doesn’t seem to phase me. I feel like the wife who has been cheated on for so many years and has finally just has had enough.

Well.... maybe if we had an NFL or NBA franchise, perhaps in Omaha, with the stadium built somewhere along 80 half-way between Lincoln and Omaha, we'd grow out of the angst we've always had about  Husker football.  It's all we've got... with the notable and happy exceptions of volleyball and women's basketball.
