NFL coaches aren't translating well, however.  At least for us.  Isn't our DB coach an NFL guy?  We've given him five of 11 players to coach up on D...and our DB's have looked really bad.  Just go 5 - 2 -4.  Opponent receivers are wide open anyways.

I think we see Thomas as CO-OC/QB and Holgerson as CO-OC/WR.

Dana has some dogs over the years at wide receiver. He coached Welker and Crabtree at Tech.

He's also had Tavon Austin, Stedman Bailey, and Tank Dell while a HC.

I'd like to see Neyor held accountable for lazy route running.  Former UGA QB Aaron Murray had an earlier season video on it.  Lazy might be an understatement.  

And not one of those guys can block.  Banks is especially bad given his size...you'd think he'd be a wall.  He's a walking penalty or whiff.

Snow has spent a majority of his team in college and has had some incredible defenses over the years. He spent 6 years with Rhule in Temple and Baylor and made the jump with him to Carolina.

Most of the time he has spent as a DC, he’s also coached DBs in some capacity.

I do agree, the 3-3-5 has struggled mightily against QBs with a pulse this year. Not sure if it’s because B10 have figured it out or we just don’t have the dudes. Injuries have impacted the secondary.

The Tommi loss has been tough.  I'd have liked to see Wright and Hill as corners with Buford replacing Hartzog.  Our lack of speed back there (did you all see Gifford trying to run down the UCLA QB on his scramble???) is just unacceptable.

I think Byle Hill had a bigger projection till he was injured.

I have liked the development of Wright.

I had the same thoughts of Buford transition down, but do think he should’ve been Giffords replacement.

I think some of that has been injuries, some of it guys playing out of position, and some a schematic choice. Ceyair Wright emerging has been great, but with Hill hurt we've still had to either leave Buford at corner or play Charles. Buford just isn't very twitchy or tall, and Charles will be good but doesn't look ready. And then the final piece is you can't take away everything as a defense unless you have Georgia/OSU/Bama level talent. We prioritize stopping the run and not giving up big plays, which has generally worked out well. But doing both of those well makes it really difficult to defend short/intermediate passes.

I think the growth of Wright has been impressive, and Buford playing corner has had some expected bad moments but he's in position most of the time. I haven't really had a problem with the DBs overall, wish they'd make a few more plays on the ball but IMO all a coach can do is put them in position and they have to do the rest. Gifford and Singleton are good players, just don't have "it" as far as taking the ball away. Hartzog/Buford do to a degree, but they have physical limitations.

Agreed.  It's a group that has been limited by injury and physical gifting.  Hartzog has a good nose for the ball, but he's not big or fast.  Gifford excels against slower, more methodical teams.  In space?  Not great.  

This D with that 2010 DB talent would be really nice.  Can we get Crick and Suh another year after some ice baths and Time Machine work?

Yes, and I hope he sees which coaches should be retained or released as he readies to becoming our OC. 

This is basically a vote of no confidence for Satt.  He should get his resume in order. 

 
This certainly is an interesting development. Most coaches would wait until the end of the season before making changes. It's nice to see Rhule acknowledging there's a problem. I assume this is basically his way of saying Satterfield's way isn't working; wouldn't be surprised if Satterfield weren't here next season.
