12-Team Playoff On the Way; 14-Team to Follow

Also, Arkansas (who just beat #4 TN) lost to Oklahoma State who is 3-3 now. A game they would not have played with the new 9-game SEC season. I’m sure the SEC will claim this makes their season harder, but really it just makes it easier for them to hide their flaws.

Sounds like the B1G and SEC are going to push for four guaranteed playoff spots when the field expands so that they can beef up their regular season schedules (more marquee matchups) so they can push for even more TV revenue.  If they have four guaranteed spots, they don't have to worry as much about teams losing those big games.

Like I said, that was the only reason I’d be okay with it. I hate the idea of not having the good matchups early on. There is going to be a “rigged” narrative this way but it makes some sense even mathematically. A 20 team conference (esp one with better teams historically and recently) with a tougher schedule should have more playoff spots than a 12 team conference with a bunch of former G5 teams.

On the other hand I still don’t really think it’s necessary in a 16 team playoff, since the pollsters have that built in bias already. I think 9 out of 10 years each of these conferences would get 4 teams. Then you could completely avoid the narrative.

Anyhow, if they get this agreement maybe we’ll keep TN on the schedule. But I’d prefer we play KSU or Missouri or Colorado or Oklahoma occasionally.

Was he talking to this coach in the mirror?

I think maybe Lane and these other coaches might be stupid. I’ll believe there’s a universe where the 2nd place SEC team in the standings doesn’t get invited. I guess maybe if they have 3 losses but… still doubting that happens.

And I don’t like the idea of not figuring out on the field who the conference champion is.

Pretty simple for it to happen this year.  A&M beats Texas, loses to Georgia in SEC Championship.  Misses out of the playoffs (they'd have 4 losses).

Good point. So it’s easier than I thought. However… A&M is 4th in the standings and I’m not sure beating Texas would move them into 2nd. Texas isn’t a common opponent between them and Tennessee so I don’t think it helps them in their standing.

Winner of A&M/Texas plays Georgia.

The expanded playoffs haven't even happened yet, so to early to say what the effects will be. I think it will diminish the regular season over time in terms of the importance of individual games since a single loss is almost meaningless. But it means more teams have a chance at winning it all, so who knows.

I would rather have an 8-team playoff because I believe that rewards the regular season more while still getting more teams a chance to recover from one loss or a really tough schedule.

But, as the tweet noted, there were 14 games that had direct playoff implications that wouldn't have mattered to near the extent under previous setups.  It really can't be argued that it doesn't make more regular season games more meaningful, just in a different way.
