Who's Leaving? 2024/25 version

When is financial contract day?

Bowls are officially stupid if all your players leave on the portal day. Who is left to play? Will be a skeleton crew at best and dangerous at worst. Why not  wait until bowls and playoffs are over to  facilitate player movement? That way players could at least showcase themselves for their next team

Pardon me if this has been answered somewhere.  I briefly looked and didn't find it.

Exactly, how many were on the roster this year?

If we got rid of all walk-ons, how many would that be? This is a tough one because some of the "walk-ons" weren't really because they were on NIL deals.

That then gives us at least an idea of how many scholarship players are going to leave to get to 105 after we add in the recruiting class.

Then, if that number gets below 105, that's how many transfers we can pick up.

I currently am totally lost on the numbers.

I have usually used this spreadsheet to track scholarship guys, though that has been more wonky the last few years with NIL considerations.

A week or so ago, I added the full roster because of the hard cap of 105 incoming.  I believe it was 153 at that point.  On the 2025 sheet, the guys in red are guys who I belive were walk-ons this year.  I've been deleting the guys who have been announced as leaving early, and I do add new commits as they announce/sign.  I have us at 145 right now.  So we have to divest of at least 40 more, probably 50 if we take many incoming transfers.

Thanks!  I forgot where to find this and didn’t know you had gone to this extent. Nice work.

Its going to be a crazy time to be a fan.

FYI….Bear Tenny is not coming.

How many staffers does one think NU has working full-time (plus overtime) monitoring the comings and goings of 100+ college fb programs looking for kids to reach out to.  This offseason is going to be bananas, and sadly some talented kids are going to be left without a home even though they are absolutely talented enough to play D1 football.
I'd be looking at FCS or smaller schools (non P4).  I'm done taking SEC rejects.  It almost never works.

For every Trey Palmer there's 4 guys you never hear from and another that breaks into vape shops.

Honestly, for this year, I’d think about hiring a certain number of part time people who love this sort of thing to do nothing but comb through the thousands of players and their stats that are going to be available. You wouldn’t have to pay them much or even take their recommendations seriously. But, maybe there’s a guy that pops up on a number of recommendation lists that nobody had thought of that’s worth looking at.

This year is just going to be so crazy with thousands of guys available that programs need to be thinking outside the box on finding guys that can help your program.

Also add in the fact that we will actually have a wr coach that played that position and you should get more productivity from them.  I understand that position coaches teach other positions that they never play McGuire(qb) but to bring him in as a first year position coach didn't help at all.  Never understand how McGuire was going to make the wide receivers better if he never played that position.
Some people do, and some people teach. Being a former player does not necessarily translate to being a good coach/teacher. It’s pretty much completely different skill sets.

Poorly thought out decision and should have been phased in over a few years.
10,000 % this. There's no reason they couldn't have incrementally lowered the roster limit over a 2 or 3 year period to get to 105. Now there's an absolute glut of mayhem and frustration/confusion. No grace period to soften the blow, both to the programs and the student athletes who now have to make hard decisions.

NCAA, go put on your wig, nose, and clown makeup. Cause that's what you are

I'm not suggesting NU ignore the portal, I'm suggesting you don't catch the elite programs taking their scraps.
Pertaining to getting players into our program, how do we catch the elite programs?

Personally, I don’t think we can afford to not take some elite program scraps, especially this time around. You’ve got HS recruiting which is always a bit of a crapshoot and, like it or not, we are playing 2nd fiddle to the elite programs, and you’ve got the portal. Maybe the UNL Bioengineering Dept. can grow us some players?

Except that probably means Knighton is gone…which means that you better be ready to attempt to keep Van Poole, Davis, MaGahee… hold on tight
If FSU is spending all this money and just were undefeated last season… do they really want all these players that got very little reps at Nebraska?! Maybe. Sounds risky but so was starting DJ Ukulele.
