Your 2025 Nebraska Cornhuskers

There are rumblings that DeShon Singleton might come back for another year.  He was hurt two plays into his fifth game in 2023, just missing out on a redshirt.  Plus he now has an extra year of eligibility because his JUCO year doesn't count.
I think I would take this. He was part of a group that seemed to regress both with coverage and tackling but it’s hard to tell who was responsible…or if it was just different guys on different plays.

I guess I think Singleton seemed to play well.  Or at least I don't remember him screwing up a lot.

It sure sounds to me like we had a terrible time getting everyone on the same page.  Some of that seems to be conflict between White and Butler.  But it looked to me like some of it was just guys (*cough* Hartzog *cough*) not doing what they were supposed to do.  And we apparently only had two decent cornerbacks on the team - Hill and Wright - and once Hill got hurt, we struggled a ton.

I think Singleton had good games and bad games - he was pretty brutal tackling in the bowl. So was Hartzog, that first missed tackle on the screen was inexcusable. But Singleton also missed a tackle on that play, and made a really poor attempt on another screen that went for a lot more yards than it should have. Maybe he was good outside of that, but those stuck out to me. Nobody played well against Indiana but IIRC that was another game where Singleton just didn't tackle. When that happens he isn't bringing anything to the table.

I wouldn't mind him back (the games where he does tackle I think he makes an impact), but we already have too many DBs and I just don't know if another year of Singleton is worth the roster spot of somebody who could develop into more. Priority is winning though, so I suppose with the number of guys available in the portal each year you have to go with the best short-term options.

I thought he was terrible all year.  He was inconsistent tackling and seemed late in helping out over the top.  If I'm being fair, I don't know if those issues were him, but he seemed to be chasing a lot of plays from behind.

The bowl game was by far the best performance I recall all year.

Yeah, I have no clue lol. I always don't know how to square Rhule consistently talking about him as an NFL player, and the grading/analysis I read claiming he isn't even P4 caliber. Rhule definitely talks up players beyond their actual talents, but I truly have no idea if he's good or bad.

My justification for thinking he played poorly in the bowl game -this gave up an additional 40 yards (although again, Hartzog missed an ever easier tackle attempt right before this):

Can blame the field for this one, he is going full speed upfield and turning the corner on the grass was a challenge - but he has this shot at the QB and the doesn't even affect the throw which is completed for a long 3rd down conversion:

Again not sure he is to blame here, I don't know what the coverage is and Bullock ends up looking like the guy who got beat. But I don't think this is where Singleton was meant to be immediately prior to a 35 yard completion:

And this went from a 3 yard gain to a 21 yard gain:

This is absolutely cherry picking examples, and a couple of them could be blamed on conditions/other players. He did fight through this hold to make a potentially TD saving tackle (Gifford might have got there) on a drive where we ended up turning them over on downs. But I don't recall any other specific plays where he stood out in a good way.

Singleton n the DB’s need to be taught to tackle. He’s not the only one, but I’ve seen him run up to make impact with either WR or rb, only to bounce off and the ball carrier gets the first down or way more yards afterwards. I guess the fact that he gets into position to make the play is good. Just doesn’t finish it. Wrap up. Hartzog and Gifford also had bounce off guys type of tackles.

You really look at our strong defenses over the last few decades and the have had hitters at safety.

Gomes & Hagg to come to mind.  Gerry obviously.  Every chance I get I bring up how underrated I think Omar Brown was at Nebraska.
