Your 2025 Nebraska Cornhuskers

I'd be curious to see what the actual written rules are regarding something like this.

I went to a DII school and walked on to the basketball team my freshman year. Decided it was too much for too little (was never going to get minutes), so sophomore year onwards I would just practice on scout team with the women, along with a handful of other guys. We had to go through NCAA clearing and compliance officially, and it counted towards our eligibility, but otherwise there was no limit or restriction on having practice players for the ladies to go up against, despite their roster being full.

The Husker women's basketball team had the same "practice squad" for years.  Not sure if they still do.  I don't know if that kind of thing is affected but it's probably at least somewhat different as those players would never be able to play in games, whereas a football practice squad could end up on the roster the following year.

Hire a post graduate practice squad?  You would need maybe 25 guys.  The UFL average pay is 58k.  Under 1.5 million per year to have an experienced squad to practice against and it would solve the eligibility issue.  Call them assistant coaches since there is no limits on those if a true practice squad isn't allowed.

Google found it for me - they are allowed still.  https://www.si.com/fannation/name-image-likeness/nil-news/saving-walk-on-athletes-why-ncaa-roster-limits-need-practice-squads#:~:text=With a practice squad%2C every, count toward collegiate athletic eligibility.

They still are included in the roster limit.
You may be 100% correct but there is conflicting information on Google -

In NCAA football, a practice squad is a group of players who are signed to a team but not on the main roster. Practice squads are used to develop players and provide replacements for the main roster.

How do practice squads work?

  • Practice squad players are not eligible for scholarships or Alston payments.

  • They are not allowed to travel with the team or dress for home games.

  • Practice squad players are often part of the scout team, where they mimic the play style of an upcoming opponent.

  • Practice squad players are familiar with the team's plays and formations, which helps develop them for the main roster.

  • Practice squad players can be called up to the main roster to replace injured players or players on bereavement leave

This seems like it's a Google AI overview, which is worthless when it comes to getting a specific reliably factual answer to a specific question.

The way I'm reading that is that you can have a number of practice players, who aren't a part of the roster, that is equal to 20% of the roster size.

So if your roster is 105, you can have an additional 21 players (20% of 105) as practice players.
That's how I originally took it as well but the same SI guy said conflicting stuff later in the article.

Since everyone has 105, why not say 21.  If you have an 80 man roster, why worry about a practice squad as everyone fits in the 105.  That interpretation is flawed.  This is why I agree with others that the ncaa needs to spell this out.

The SI article is a guy quoting himself in a letter that he sent to the judge encouraging him to certify the settlement and "urging" the court to implement a practice squad.

From the link in the article linked above:

I desperately urge the court to modify the settlement to halt the negative impacts already occurring to athletes who occupy walk-on and depth positions on collegiate rosters.  Every sport should be allowed to carry a practice squad of up to 20% of the newly imposed roster size limit.
