OFFICIAL Possible Basketball Coaches Thread

The list of men's basketball coaches who apparently don't want the Nebraska job is growing.
Three sources Tuesday told The World-Herald that Wichita State's Gregg Marshall was offered the NU job, likely at an annual salary of at least $2 million.

Two of those sources said Marshall has turned it down, while the third said Marshall wasn't showing any interest. Two of those sources have direct access to Marshall, who didn't return messages left by The World-Herald.

to paraphrase:

Wichita State's Marshall says No

Ohio's Groce apparently wouldn't be interested

VCU's Smart apparently wouldn't be interested

Not surprised. Can't say I blame them, all of the above could stand for much higher profile job offers with far greater risk.

LOL, Geuss the tax payers of lincoln,Nebraska and the best facilities might of just failed. Well that sucks. Here is to hiring someone that we are pissed about and having him jam it down our throats with a ncaa tourney win.

Anyone who thought coaches would be lining up to coach at Nebraska, because of our fancy new facilities, had their head in the clouds in the first place.

With the apparent (and understandable) disinterest of most or all of the young up and coming coaches, I'm leaning toward Rick Majerus. Don't know if he has any interest in moving or likes the anonimity of St Louis U. The man can flat out coach, does well at recruiting and his kids would run through a wall for him. While Scott Sutton may be a decent coach, I'm afraid the Peter Principle may kick in and he'd be another Barry Collier. Rick M would seem to have many of the qualities of Doc Sadler that we liked. Hard working, runs a clean program, recruits good kids, likeable to a majority of fans. Plus he should be a better recruiter with name recognition. I don't think we can do better than Rick, outside of offering 3 to 4 million, but we could do much worse.

Not so gloomy as some are depicting......Marshall probably was never going to be interested ....Groce's situation hasn't played out yet and Smart was an extreemly long shot.

Besides, just because an agent SAYS his candidate said no, doesn't mean he was ever really offered.......just a cheap way to get pub for his guy.

A lot of time and plenty of candidates yet. Just need to trust T.O.

Besides, a lot of groaning was done early that we might just "settle" too early and too easily.

This process looks like we are being pretty detailed and diligent, and not afraid to go after a variety of targets

We are both on the same page TS. I don't see a young up and comer wanting to take a chance on the Huskers. Lets face it may of these guys look at Nebraska as a coaches grave yard. Majeras on the other hand might see it as a challenge and with the right salary and state of the art facilities he could very well see it as the perfect place to end his coaching career.

Sounds like Larry Eustachy has asked for consideration and stated he'd be interested if we would want to talk to him. Not sure I think that much of him but the information is an FYI. Some believe we also contacted Smart today but I haven't been able to get a conformation one way or the other. But I would hope like hell we at least ask to talk to him.
I will pass on Larry Eustachy, he was a good coach at ISU and lead them to an elite 8. But the whole partying thing after his team just lost a game hours before hand is still what people remember him for.
AND, wasn't it coeds he was partying with......?? Somehow I doubt Dr. Tom would approve...............(not exactly his idea of "mentoring")
No, but Dr. Tom is all about forgiveness and second-chances, though I shouldn't have to remind folks of that.

Not saying this is likely, but a Larry Eustachy hire would be a good choice (provided there is a moral turpitude clause in his contract)--he's got NCAA victories and up to a Sweet 16 victory under his belt, he knows the region, and the NY Times piece Nexus posted is a good read in humility, IMO--sounds like he learned his lessons.

Honestly, I hate to say this about DoNU, but it appears that Larry Eustachy is the best name out there that Nebraska can pick up and make a splash with. He's the best, proven coach out there that hasn't flat turned us down or played us for contract extensions/more money from the school they're currently at.

Face it, folks--we're running out of willing dance partners, and the ones that want to dance with us aren't going to take us past first or second base.

I comment on Lee's story this morning at the OWH online. I stated I didn't know who his sources were for the BBall Search but his information was different than almost everyone else who's close to the search. I stated something to the fact that he had motivations other than covering the story. They deleted my comment from the site. Now TO has issued a statement stating that Lee is full of BS. Of course USC thinks the AD is full of BS but they've got dirks back. Follow Brian Rosenthal. He's pretty connected in this search.

I agree the OWH's handling of this "story" this morning has been pretty suspect. It appears Lee had nothing more than rumors, but the story was splashed all over Omaha.com this morning. When Osborne corrected the rumors, the headline of the story changed and it was moved to a less obvious place on the website. As some reasonable people began pointing out how inaccurate Lee's "sources" appeared to be, the comments were removed, and the story has been relegated to an even less prominent place on the site. Lee appears to have missed this one. What I don't get is what his motivation for spreading that kind of rumor so prominently would be? Reading that headline...and the conclusions people naturally jump to...is damaging to the search...which is obviously why Tom spoke up this morning, even thought he said he wouldnt not comment on the search.
