Dana Holgorsen Hired as Offensive Coordinator

I think the only thing I could see is if DH wants to fire all of the position coaches, or something like that, and Rhule doesn't want him to. But I think he should get to do whatever he wants :P

Unless we score 10 points against Iowa, then he can leave!
The nice thing is, Holgorson gets a few months here working with this staff and really looking at who he can work with and who he can’t. For instance, many think our WR coach needs to go. But, now DH has expressed that Satt was asking the WRs to play way too many positions. I think he’s also shown in the Wisconsin game maybe our routes in plays weren’t the best. So, was that the problem?  Or, is our WR coach actually bad?  DH has time to analyze that. I expect him to make some changes if he stays. But, I’m not going to be surprised if the majority of the offensive staff is retained.

Because I was curious:

Caveat being I'm not sure who was calling the plays when he was HC (probably still him but ...)

The site I was looking at had wonky stats from his days as an OC so I don't have those numbers.

He was discussing the original hire, not the progression (or regression) over 2 years.  I just find it really hard to Monday morning QB the Satt hire without it being a complete failure on Rhules part (which it turned out to be) but it could have just as easily gone the other way.  It wasn't as though the guy was completely unqualified, and Rhule had worked w/ him for years in the past.
Your argument is moot wheen 2 people come in with marginal resumes and 1 performs and one doesn't..!!

Honestly, how much of a difference can changing OC make right now?  Lets be completely forward thinking.........the players know certain plays, schemes, etc........what real difference can be made right now?  Panic move if you ask me.........which smart players will see thru.  I am guessing this is a Dylan move, and only a Dylan move.  Something has been said and now we are saving face some to hold onto a only 5 star qb recruit in school history........tell me I am wrong!
Okay...  you are wrong..!!

Really excited that Rhule isn't afraid to make changes, and early rather than waiting until the end of the year. Need to get at least one of these remaining games.

Can't install an offense in two weeks but can be more situationally smart.

And seeing Nate and Luke get more reps makes you wonder what Satt is/isn't seeing.  I just don't see him staying.  I do applaud his integrity and work ethic to stay.  It's gotta be tough seeing the success and accolades heaped on Dana and still stay to do your job.  As coach, not a fan, but I admire his character.  Even if he is getting paid....
+1 and even telling Dana to "do it" when it came to doing the play calling, helping Dana with the verbage of the playbook, and collaborating with the other coaches to help this offense be successful.

Satterfield could have just left, but he's stayed on and helped. That's high character and a true teammate

Here's another one that came form one of our beat writers.  Same issue, no idea who the "OC" was when he was HC.  Shows conference rank/national rank:  Even his worst year rushing record not "much" worse that ours.(2007)  His passing ranks far and above us.  Some one had posted he averages 10 points more per game than NU's....We'd have 9-10 wins per past 2 years.

Really glad Rhule did this. However, based on stats shared by Mavric above, I do not see an offensive juggernaut in Dana but Satt was becoming complacent. At least we now know that Rhule is willing to replace coaches who are not performing. My only question is why keep Foley. I can argue that Foley is 10 times more incompetent than Satt. Our ST have been abysmal to say the least. They cost us way more games than offense.

let us see how all this translates on the field this Saturday.

Dowdell doing Dowdell things, like running directly at the safety on a break away?  I know he did that once previously and broke a kids arm, but one cut and he's in the endzone on both of those because neither Safety wanted any of that.  Drives me nuts, he has vision apparently but his vision is to go destroy the last defender and not score a TD.
The long run where he could have broke to the sideline for a longer gain or maybe even an house call, instead he cut back up the middle where there was a second defender? Lol it’s like there’s blinders in his mask.

Also worth noting that Holgorsen's best two rushing years - 2015 & 2016 - were with a QB running for 500-ish yards.
We can also attribute the ultimate success and best rushing years of Helu, Rex and Ameer because of QB Taylor Martinez and Tommy Armstrong playing in a Read Option offense.  I mean, some defenses had to account for the QB running threat.  Pretty sure the RBs and QBs did mighty fine off of each other, until they had to pass the ball.

And then it was no bueno.

Was also thinking of the play where he tried to cut in the backfield and got swallowed up for a loss. If he would have just stuck his head down it would have been a 1 yard gain.

Hope he lines them up in the wishbone, but happy for the diamond formation to come.

The play calling could not be worse, but I wonder about player buy in. He does not seem like a Rhule run the ball guy. Whatever just win a game.

Good points, Sean. Lol sounds similar to what I heard Callahan just say on BRW-U.

I guess this is both a criticism and a compliment… if this is the offense that Satterfield designed but with the leadership of Holgorsen then this is exactly what needed to happen.

The most points scored in 2 seasons, talk about an upgrade at OC.
