Defensive Play

I know it worked against No Illinois but still surprised to see only 4 down lineman on 4th and goal from the 1 yard line. Not sure that works starting in B10 play on any short yardage play. You'd think a run off to the right would have been the call for the Huskies.

I don't think it makes a difference if you have guys in a 3-4 point stance or 2 point stance.  There are still 4 d-linemen occupying the 5 offensive linemen.  NU's nose is shaded to the right-side of the offense to take away the advantage on that side, and that assumes that Daniels can occupy the center and guard.  Plus, without a RB in the formation, it shows it will either be a QB run or a pass to the right.  If anything, NIU can try to bust NU's pursuit to the right and go back weak side (left), with the QB following the TE on the bottom of the formation.

I don't think we did it based on their formation. I know several times last year on 3rd and 4th and short we still only kept 3 down lineman and it drove me crazy. Having both Daniels in the middle is a massive improvement from last year though

And I wonder if it's partly a question of whether we could get a fourth big man subbed in there in time. I'd take Stille or Thomas in there with the Davis bros & Darrion for sure, but if we can't get that fourth big guy subbed in I like Alex Davis being there on the edge.

I agree with Alex Davis on the edge, he is listed at 6'5 250, so he could be hand in the dirt DE for a lot of teams. Iowas starting DE's are 6'5 255 and 6'8 280.

I liked what I saw on defense on Saturday.  As some have said, it's one game and that doesn't make a trend.  If you remember last year, we saw a lot of pass rush and sacks in the CU game (7 sacks)....only to have them disappear the rest of the season.

HOPEFULLY, they don't disappear this year.
When you play teams that are well coached and with some talent things get more difficult.

Naa....not buying it. We played some teams equal or worse to CU and the defense wasn’t the same.

Colorado's line was atrocious last year, and I'm skeptical of their "improvement" this year. I'm sure they're a bit better, but no sacks given up to CSU on ~20 dropbacks isn't terribly impressive for anyone, that's the expectation. I think Chins will let the D loose and we'll get some decent pressure. They actually appear to have a running game this year which makes them a little scarier, but I think they'll have to throw and we just have to cover long enough for blitzes to affect the throw.

So on the rewatch, here's what I'm seeing.

We seemed to be lined up more in what you'd think of as a Nickel formation for big chunks of the game. Here's Illinois' last touchdown of the game:

I don't get this at all, and it's pretty upsetting honestly. Ball's on the 10. They're only lined up three guys wide with two guys in the backfield. Why is this a Nickel setup for us? Hate to say this but that's pretty stupid IMO.

You only have two linebackers staying home in a scenario where a run is extremely likely. JoJo's basically the nickelback manning up against their slot guy to the left...but we need that m'fer staying home to hunt down the ball. Really frustrating.

I see what you're saying, but Ferguson and Barry bite hard on the read there. There is no way Ferguson should be crashing that hard on the RB. Barry is a bit more understandable, but he flows too hard as well as the backside ILB. If those guys stay home they probably stop him at the line or for a loss. Guessing Illinois had seen Ferguson crashing hard earlier and keyed on it.

My main concern is that Wisconsin will rush for 300+ if we line up & play like that.
