Hypothetically, if someone circumvents a ban and is on good behavior, do we let it stand? If they are on skirt-the-line, but not "egregious" behavior, do we still let them be a part of the board? Where's the line on that one?
This is a good point. I don't know how many of you other Mods go into the IP searching that I do. I kind of think I'm the "IP Cop" around here, and that, for the most part, I'm the guy who gets folks booted. I have no problem with that. I joined the Mod Team specifically to oust trolls. That hasn't changed for me.
But let's say Guy X has been banned. Let's say, after six/twelve months Guy X creates another account. Guy X behaves, is good people, and generally doesn't cause a problem under the new account. It's entirely possible that, being a snoop like I am, I'll know that Guy X is back. I'll watch for a while, and if he's being a good member of HuskerBoard, I'll not say anything.
I'm not saying this has happened. We're talking hypotheticals.
I agree with Frank that the purpose of the ban isn't to ban the NAME, it's to ban the guy - the problem. But forgive me if I haven't mentioned that Guy X is back, operating under a different name, and not causing problems. Folks do change, and if they're making HuskerBoard a better place.... I'm not going to give them grief.
Hope that's an OK philosophy.
