I actually have an idea - need opinion

What do we think of creating a forum to talk Huskers without any GIF's or wise cracks.....strictly Husker talk?

I am not taking a shot at anyone on the board or any of you. This stuff is funny sometimes. it gets frustrating.

That would be heaven - but, then again, that's what the Husker Football forum is supposed to be. If they want to crack wise, they should be in the BS forum. It would take some really clear-cut rules or standards to enforce; and sometimes the levity helps break the tension of a discussion.

I see both sides of that. I'm one of the first to drop a gif into a thread - I like them, and think they're funny if used wisely. But I can easily see Eric's point about how it can get annoying.

The thing I notice is, most of the board seems to get that there's a time for gifs and a time for real discussion. Most of the serious discussion threads from this week have been wisecrack free.

However, if we did something like this we could make it somewhat "exclusive" by having a post-restricted forum, or even a password-restricted forum like the Woodshed, where you have to ask permission to post - and that asking carries with it an understanding that there's no shenanigans in that forum. We'd give out the password or posting rights to anyone who asks, just like the Shed, but by making them ask for permission is putting them on notice that it's for frank discussions only. If they start fooling around, they don't get to post.

Which begs the question - does IP.Board allow us to restrict posting in a particular forum to specific people? Because once we give someone the password we can't take it back.

I think that would drive "discussion" away from the football forum and turn that into a place where not a lot of folks go and then what's the point of having it?

Yes, we could. However, to do it we would have to create a new user group and place them in it, then assign only that user group (plus mods and admins) to the forum.

I've seen this done on a few other boards over the years (non Husker related ones). Where the "elite" or otherwise privileged members go to hang out and leave the unwashed masses to the other forums.

If we get a good group together that wants to talk along the lines that ETR is thinking of then it can work

Sort of what we have now with this forum, but the line as to who get's in and who doesn't is pretty cut and dry. With this one, we'd need to figure out who approves members. It's our board, of course, so we can ultimately do whatever we want..

Just spit balling here, but what if we make it ETR centric? ETR can invite folks in that have something solid to contribute to the conversation, all actual football related stuff. I mean X's and O's, where the rubber hits the road kind of stuff.

We don't really need to publicize it, maybe. Invite only. First rule is you don't talk about the club. Fight club style

I like what knapp has done here with the announcement regarding the 2-deep discussion thread. I think we can have a regular featured thread or two, spotlighting good, quality discussions and promoting them.

Perhaps it'll get people thinking -- 'I want to start a thread that's worthy of getting featured.' And it's very, very little effort to implement.

I like the idea of encouraging good discussions by highlighting them more than I like the idea of an inner circle forum. I'm worried that a forum like that would create even more "us vs. them" thinking.

Yeah, we'd never want a secret subforum that only a selected few members can see.
