I see both sides of that. I'm one of the first to drop a gif into a thread - I like them, and think they're funny if used wisely. But I can easily see Eric's point about how it can get annoying.
The thing I notice is, most of the board seems to get that there's a time for gifs and a time for real discussion. Most of the serious discussion threads from this week have been wisecrack free.
However, if we did something like this we could make it somewhat "exclusive" by having a post-restricted forum, or even a password-restricted forum like the Woodshed, where you have to ask permission to post - and that asking carries with it an understanding that there's no shenanigans in that forum. We'd give out the password or posting rights to anyone who asks, just like the Shed, but by making them ask for permission is putting them on notice that it's for frank discussions only. If they start fooling around, they don't get to post.
Which begs the question - does IP.Board allow us to restrict posting in a particular forum to specific people? Because once we give someone the password we can't take it back.
