Iowa - What Did We Learn?

There were countless occasions last night when he had one, at times two, wide open guys in the flat and he didn’t hit them.  It was a big reason we beat Wisconsin so soundly and he didn’t go to it at the same level.

frankly I’m surprised he didn’t have more fumbles because nearly every one of the sacks it seemed like he had no idea a hit was imminent
I hated Verduzzco, but he'd say DR is a slow blinker.  He continues, IMO, to hold the ball for what he wants and doesn't take what he has.  @Mavric continues to point out has abysmal 20+ completion rate.  I'll add he also has put up stats with his 10+ and IIRC, looks even worse.  I wish he'd grip and rip 5-6 yard routes and hope they'll grind for more yards than  YOLO his 20+ passes...Would love to see Tommy Armstrong percentage on those.  I looked with no luck.

TA on 20+ yard throws by year:

2016 - 12/50, 24.0%, 448 yards, 9.0 ypa, 4 TDs, 3 INTs

2015 - 30/85, 35.3%, 969 yards, 11.4 ypa, 8 TDs, 5 INTs

2014 - 23/73, 31.5%, 874 yards, 12.0 ypa, 10 TDs, 4 INTs

Yep!

You get to pick read made players!

Guys that have been in a college program, that have lifted in a college program, that have been to classes and know the routines.  That are, for the most part, physically and mentally mature.  They are not going to miss home, they are not going to hate the grind, they know it and understand it.

God, Bo would THRIVE with the transfer portal today.
He did great in the JUCO ranks.  Imagine the whole of college football.  He could also develop guys.  And get guys into the NFL on the regular.....Man I miss that drunk monkey....#Boliever :D  Losing Carl and Marvin hurt him though.  And being forced to keep Wats year 1.  And look what he did with Rich "PGA" Fisher as a receiver coach.

Yep, he also needs to grip and rip the long ball too.  We have a full season of examples of him air mailing deep throw after deep throw after deep throw. Many of these throws a bullet pass is more than enough, particularly the ones where our guy is wide open with no defender within 5 + yards..

these are typical challenges working with a true freshman qb

Thanks!  To compare the above:

Dylan Raiola on throws 20+ yards downfield (2024):

18/51, 35.3%, 557 yards, 11.3 ypa, 2 TDs, 4 INTs

Heinrich Haarberg on throws 20+ yards downfield (2023):

7/30, 23.3%, 281 yards, 9.4 ypa, 2 TDs, 4 INTs

Tommy "YOLO" Armstrong ladies and gentleman.........I'd like to apologize for repeatedly referring to him as "YOLO" and "Arm Punt".

Agree.  @Cornbred (IIRC) coined the phrase he throws "lazy".  I think often times the lack of separation is DR throwing lazy and allowing the DB to be closer or in a better position to break on the ball.

some guys clamoring for what Deion did. Let’s keep in mind they play on a crappy 2nd tier conference. If Colorado was in the big 10 they would probably be 3-9.
I think about any plan will work it’s just who is executing the plan

The biggest thing we need to do is probably fire Ed, Satt, & demote McGuire to WR analyst

We will find portal fellas. Good coaches are difficult to find.

I also learned while our overall record improved from 5-7 to 6-6. We did not improve vs P2 conference competition. 3-6 last year and 3-6 this year.

Improvement should be gauged by who you do it against. Quality opponents is the measuring stick.

If I'm a defensive upperclassmen, I am pissed at what happened last night. Remember, the defense only gave up 7 points. The other 6 came off of a muffed punt and a fumble by the offense at the worst possible moment.

Raiola is going to have to get a lot of coaching in the offseason to greatly up his intensity level in the pocket. I don't think it's accurate to say that he has "bad pocket presence," it's that he is just a little too relaxed.

At first this relaxed pocket presence was a breath of fresh air early in the season because we hadn't seen it in years. But then it became a bit of a liability.

I would also like to see him taking off running a bit more next year, and also he needs to look for the check down earlier as well.

I didn't really have any significant gripes with play calling in this one. The calls were good and our line was dominant almost all night. But I would say, if you get 5 yards on a meat grinder run on 1st down, run that s*** again on 2nd.

We beat Colorado, otherwise had the same year.

Raiola will never take the next step unless he fixes his footwork. It is atrocious.

This is why Thomas can go as well.  UNLESS DR is listening to his private QB coach and disregarding any coaching from NU staff.  Then I'd look at moving on from DR.

Hang on. "Atrocious" is really harsh, and I don't think it's even accurate. Considering he's a true freshman it's not bad.

I think the bigger issue is needing a higher level of intensity. His internal clock needs to speed up so he can find guys that are open faster.
