Yeah, I was hesitant to post this for that particular reason. I figured it was mostly true, because I remember when Clinton did a lot of cutting in his time. Shutting down old military posts and things like that to save money.
Those Clinton-era military base closures aren't quite the same thing, but it's an interesting example of the problem. The Pentagon itself recommended the closure of several military bases it no longer needed and handed the list to Congress. That's where Congresspeople realized how much money those bases brought to their district. So each Congressperson opposed closure of their base, and supported closure of another district's base. By the time it bled into the Bush administration, d!(k Cheney had drafted a list of closures to be based 100% in Democrat districts.
If the current budget hacking drama involves DOD excesses, I haven't gotten the memo yet.
BTW.....weren't we saving Just Normal American Utopia for less overtly partisan topics?
