New DC

The Bills defense doesn’t look so hot so Butler lost out to that guy?  :dunno

I’m not sold on SMU guy.

Jim Leonhard for his Big 10 chops or Elijah Robinson for his recruiting chops.  These are the guys I’d be looking at.
For the record hiring one of the main assistant coaches just for their recruiting chops is a thing of the past.  We can have any 10 coaches on staff go out on the trail.  See Mozee, and Keith Williams.  They aren't "main" coaches but they are part of the ones that go on the road.

Time to start thinking past the days of old, and to be creative.  And as Decked said.  If we bring Robinson on as an Asst. DL coach to go on the road great, but not as a DC.

Interesting logic.

Selecting a coach is a subjective decision.  He didn’t lose a DC off.

Can this guy coach?  I get he has invaluable ties to the Miami area, but I’m trying to be hopeful that’s he actually a good coach at the college level and not McGuire 2.0
I’m not as concerned about recruiting. I’m more interested in winning and coaching up the guys we do get. With the portal and NIL unsure if my 1st concern of a coach would be recruiting over coaching. But that’s just me. Winning cures a lot of ills.

I hear ya, I don’t think I’d call it a grand slam or anything but I think probably the comp is more like a younger Bob Wager than McGuire. Not much in the resume of college coaching (although Simpson now has experience at the power level behind the scenes at least) but he won as a HC at the HS level enough to be respected which is still something. Wager was widely considered a strong hire for us until off the field stuff got in the way.

Just like with Wager, historically the position coaches who get the recruiting coordinator part of their title are at RB, TE, or OLB because while technique is important everywhere, you’re only coaching one or a max two players on the field at any one time and QB coach requires a ton more coaching acumen. So all of that to say I don’t mind hearing more recruiting with this position coach if that’s a strength for him.

If we don't have the athletes to win all over the field it don't matter who coaching them here.  Get them here and let the coaches we do have that can coach coach them. All round team job!!!

In today's world of college football, you need to arrange your staff in a certain way.  You need guys who can absolutely recruit their tail off and may lack a little on the coaching side, but you better make sure that your other coaches can cover up their deficiencies.  It was said that he will coach OLB.  If we hire a DC who specializes in coaching LB, then it isn't a major issue.  If both of our LB coaches lack in player development, then it would be worrisome.

There are unlimited coaches allowed now, so its not a big deal where he coaches.  He's filling the role of a GA or analysts of the past.  Basically an assistant to Dvoracek.
pretty much this.  If he can't coach.  I'm sure between the other 5 LB coaches and assistants they can find someone who can.
