Offensive Tempo

Not impressed with Tim Beck so far so I'm not even worried about the tempo of our offense. I just want to halfway see an 'offense' start to form.
I thought Beck did a better job of playcalling in his 1st year than Solich ever did, so I'm actually excited to see what he comes up with. Of course, playcalling doesn't mean jack if the offensive line doesn't figure out how to be physical and stop making boneheaded mistakes.

I'll take it any day over all the delay of game penalties we saw for years and years.

I'd actually been so accustomed to watching the clock tick down to nothing that my heart rate went up for the first part of last season, every time we got a possession. Then I'd realize that there were still 15-20 seconds on the clock and we were actually ready to snap the ball. As opposed to 2-3 seconds, and scrambling to get the snap off. I'll never miss that.

I think the point is, its about reps and practice speed.
Exactly.

Besides, the type of offense we run is irrelevant if we can't execute. We had false starts and holding penalties occur the first play after a time out, where our tempo isn't a factor because we'd have a couple of minutes to prepare the play. Those sort of foul ups are inexcusable, yet continue to plague the team regardless of what we're trying to do.

Tim Beck, however, is in his second year as an offensive coordinator. We have what many people claim, including Martinez himself, as a fully healthy Martinez. We have a fourth year running back who isn't the most gifted or talented in the world but has a lot of heart and determination. We have who I think is one of the most exciting wide receivers in the B1G, Kenny Bell, and we have several bodies returning on the o-line.

This year as with previous years, our success is going to largely rely on our offensive line. Whether Beck and Barney Cotton can get them to play at a consistently high level will be the largest determining factor this year. If we have lackluster line play, we have another lackluster year ahead of us.

The up-tempo no huddle is a good thing to have available in the toolbox but, being somewhat oldfashioned, I always much preferred taking your time, lining up even when the D knows what you're gonna do, and ram it down their throat. It will be awhile, if never, that we have that type of O line again so, the ability to vary tempo is good. However, it is much superior to control the LOS and thus the game itself.

And as someone said earlier, it won't do you much good unless the offense is executing and the defense is doing their job. Up-tempo, solely for the sake of going fast is not a good plan. It has to be used as part of an overall game control plan and used when it makes sense.
