Rumors Tony White to FSU

Speculation aside, what we know through their own words is that White's defense became more multiple to accommodate Rhule & staff's preferences vs various opponents.  We know the coverage went from a base man off to quarters & the formation was much more commonly a static 4-2-5.  I wouldn't describe any of these changes as more conservative, but you are naturally blitzing out of the 3-3-5 on virtually every play.

Did they clash?  Did Rhule want a more conservative defense?    I wouldn't pretend to know.  But, the fact White is moving laterally suggests there was probably too many chefs in the kitchen for his liking.
It's my understanding that there were some conflicts between White & some of the asst. coaches. I wondered how much control White had in picking asst. coaches.

Define 'conservative defense'.    I didn't think White's D was as aggressive as it was portrayed when he was hired.  Too much bend and don't break.

Agreed.  I have heard Rhule & White talk openly going back to last season about the need to get home with 4 and play coverage behind.  That may be interpreted as more conservative by some.  But, when I think aggressive, I think along the lines of McBride.  Flood the box & take away the run, make opponents one dimensional, get after the QB & compete in the secondary.

I know most probably think NU's DB's need to be protected, but I've watched a lot of Pitt games this year because of a former player, and Lynum has been really solid in an aggressive defense.  Makes me wonder if NU's DB's are doing too much thinking & just need to be freed to compete.

Exactly.  I felt like Tony White didn't blitz a lot this year and relied to much on the db's.  I think that Matt Rhule is trying to take pressure off the edge rushers bc rn we don't really have any except for maybe James Williams.  But I honestly thought we played pretty conservative in the losses and close games on defense.

Yep I agree!

Lot of games quarterbacks had all day to sit back and pick on some of our DBs.

No official word on Pot Roast yet? That has to be kind of a positive?!
Per Callahan, despite Williams and Princewell not being there, Pot Roast was at practice today. Lenhardt, Shavers, and Van Poppel were all at practice today as well.

To no surprise to me, Ty and Nash were both practicing as well. I can't see us having too many bowl opt-outs since our big names have never had one.

Better hope Willis Macgahee IV sticks around.  He's a decent replacement for Williams.

If we are really switching to a true 4-down lineman defense, we'll need guys that look like Williams or Umanmielen. McGahee looks good as a pass rusher and I'm sure we'll get him into that role, but he's never going to be big enough to be an every down 4-3 DE. Keona Davis could be a great fit though.
