Ryker Fyfe redshirted in 2012.I suppose Fyfe has already redshirted but maybe we should consider saving him for 2017 back up duty or starting role if none of the others are close. Bush showed some things but it sounds like he is not really a 'close third'. Use Bush as our backup this fall with POB redshirting IF we don't need him.
Lets just use a real world example, then, to better understand your perspective.A bit, yes. I would counter that the actual playing time he has pales in comparison to what will be asked of him here. But yes he will have playing time elsewhere in a different system.Your second paragraph contradicts your first.Next year Tommy and Fyfe are both gone. Redshirting POB means 0 QB's on the roster have any actual playing experience.I don't look at it as a level of comfort, more the reality of the situation. TA and Fyfe have a very good foothold on the #1 and #2 spots, so barring injury, or an incredible amount of development on POB's behalf, TA and Fyfe are going to see all or most of the snaps this year. You are clearly more comfortable with Fyfe as a backup than I am.
And few coaches are going to burn their highly touted freshman's redshirt just to see a small portion of relatively pointless snaps.
And it's not like we don't have an even higher touted QB coming in next year plus a transfer.
My point still stands, if POB and Gebbia are to be the future at QB it would be nice for one of them to have game experience.
Fixed it for you.Basically, if a lot of really intricate and detailed variables line up perfectly then I think we should give POB playing time in the fall.Next year Tommy and Fyfe are both gone. Comparing Kellogg under Beck to POB under Langsdorf is not even close. I doubt POB is 4th string also. Yes, I think it would be beneficial to get him meaningful reps, jmho.Lets just use a real world example, then, to better understand your perspective.A bit, yes. 2012 Nebraska - Taylor Martinez started all 14 games. Ron Kellogg, his back up, played in four games and threw the ball 9 times. Probably handed the ball off a bit too.
In your opinion, allotting a similar amount of playing time to POB is worth blowing through an entire year of eligibility? Because, barring crazy circumstances, that's what it would be. Garbage mop up duty. In all likelihood, POB will be 4th string coming out of Fall Camp, maybe 3rd at best.
The point was that back-up QB's don't play very often and Kellogg was a 2nd stringer. POB would see even fewer snaps as a 3rd/4th stringer. The coaches have recently come out and said that it's TA, Fyfe and everyone else. Reporters who watched practice said POB spent the majority of his time on the second practice field with 3's and 4's. The likelihood he even beats out Fyfe, at this point, is low.Comparing Kellogg under Beck to POB under Langsdorf is not even close. I doubt POB is 4th string also. Why would we need to be? An 18-year-old vs a 5th year senior? That's quite a head start regardless of a young player's potential. Plus, people are so concerned about someone having playing experience (regardless of how substantial or meaningful it is), Tanner Lee has plenty of it. If I had to place money on it, I'd bet Lee is the 2017 starter.OK, so if by end of the year POB can't beat a walk on QB (to be the 2nd string guy here), i shouldn't be concerned......yeah, i am good with that.
I would certainly hope you would lose that bet. If not, then we have a lot more issues than one can begin to discuss here. A transfer from Tulane or Toledo (? not sure it matters) better NOT beat out our prize - prime cut future of the program - recruit after 18 months in the program!. I guess I didn't watch film of Tanner Lee and I gave all due credit for his recruitment / transfer in but I believe we would reasonably assume he was recruited to be a solid back up in case of injury/emergency, etc. I don't want to disparage Tanner in anyway but we are building/rebuilding or whatever other term you may wish to apply to it our program for long term competitive status at the top of the conference and nationally. More mediocrity is NOT the plan here so we are seeking the best of the best to become champions at Nebraska. Atleast that is what my understanding is and we must build depth and quality. We may sacrifice some in the near term in order to get that depth and sustainable status. Why would we need to be? An 18-year-old vs a 5th year senior? If he plays a snap this year he burns the redshirt, that one snap can be in the first game or the 13th/14th.I just think that POB will be higher up the depth chart by Fall. When is the cutoff to redshirt him?
Again, if Fyfe is better then fine let him be the back up. But seeing as that's his ceiling and this is his last year I wouldn't hate the thought of having POB competing for the starting job next year with actual game experience. Between Lee, Gebbia and POB it could be the biggest difference maker in who wins the job.
dude,if a walk on AND a transfer keep POB on the bench, we got fooled big time! Why would we need to be? An 18-year-old vs a 5th year senior? Yeah I understad that, I'm wondering if there is a timeframe you have to decide he is redshirting, I assume there is not since you can pull it at any time.If he plays a snap this year he burns the redshirt, that one snap can be in the first game or the 13th/14th.I just think that POB will be higher up the depth chart by Fall. I get the sense Enhance is leery of POB's abilities.dude,if a walk on AND a transfer keep POB on the bench, we got fooled big time! Why would we need to be? An 18-year-old vs a 5th year senior?
