One of my twitter friends unlocked his account and gave permission to share his story. Kearney, NE has active cases of community spread, and for some reason the hospital is telling them to stay home & not tell anyone.
Here's his story:
Account is unlocked. Profile shows my last name. A twitter storm is brewing & I will not hold back b/c Kearney, NE is at risk. 2 G’parents have tested positive for COVID-19. My step-mom is in isolation awaiting her test result. All the while, others are at risk. A thread...1/x
As of this thread, Buffalo County in Nebraska has 4 positive cases of COVID-19. 2 of those 4 cases are within my family, my grandparents. The possibility of the third case could be that of their in home nursecare provider. That we may never know. A timeline of events...2/x
On the weekend of March 14/15, my step mother travelled back to stay w/ my G’parents to attend a funeral of a loved one. She arrived on Sunday 3/15 and spent the night at my G’parents house. The funeral was Monday 3/16. My step-mom is teacher & social distancing was a thing 3/x
In fact, her school had already been shutdown a week or two prior and they were already doing online classes. She had socially distanced herself like so many other. My step-mom and her partner (he’s retired) hasd practiced CDC guidelines of social distancing and awareness 4/x
My step-mom (Jenny) came out. She explained to her parents (my G’parents) that she would see them Sunday & Monday AM, then she was off to the funeral and she was back to an Omaha suburb (her home). She might be around people at the funeral and why risk the exposure. 5/x
Jenny went to the funeral & went home never exposing my G’parents (in their early 90’s). Tuesday evening 3/17, my grandmother fell inside her home. An ambulance was called. She refused to go to the hospital. Later it was determined she broke 3 ribs. She’s tough & stubborn. 6/x
Jenny kept tabs on her parents following the fall. Thursday came and my Gpa called his daughter Jenny. Your mom can barely walk. I can’t take car of her. Can you come back home and help? Somewhere around this time their in home nurse are provider was told she couldn’t come. 7/x
Jenny arrives Thursday night or Friday. Gma is bruised as all hell & sore. Gpa starts feeling ill next weekend. By Sunday he’s bad. Jenny asks if she should call for an ambulance. This old farmer looks up at his daughter and says yes, I think so. Gpa is taken away to Kearney. 8/x
Gpa is achy, confused, running a fever and is admitted. He is diagnosed with having pneumonia. These are all symptoms of a potential COVID-19 patient. He is not tested. Gpa lives at the hospital for a few days while being treated. Jenny remains with Gma. Gma goes south next. 9/x
By Wednesday 9/25, Gma is in bad shape. The hospital calls, we are ready to release your dad. What? Jenny replies. My mom is really ill, I’m calling an ambulance to bring her in. Just hold on a minute. Hospital: we can release your dad directly to the parking lot for pickup. 10/x
Gma arrives w/ Jenny. What isn’t fully clear is if my Gpa was fully released. He either wasn’t or he was, got home & then came back the next day. Either way, Gma arrives in Kearney at the Hospital. COVID-19 symptomatic. The staff talks, let’s order a test. Jenny - what?!? 11/x
Hospital: have you been exposed to you mom? Jenny - yes. I’ve been around her for over a week. Nurse 1: go home. Self isolate. Don’t tell anyone. Jenny: I need to talk to my dad (he’s still hospitalized) hence I don’t think he ever left. Nurse 1: go. Jenny gets escorted out. 12/x
Nurse 2: wait, you’ve been around your mom? Jenny: again, yes! Nurse 2: you need to get tested. We need to test you dad. Jenny gets tested and told to go back to her parents house and not tell anyone. Well, she does AND rightfully so tells everyone. This virus has no secrets 13/x
Jenny starts making calls. G’parents isolated in the hospital. And she waits. Luckily, testing in NE is around 24 hours now. I talk to my dad Wednesday night 3/25. I heard your G’parents have pneumonia & might be hospitalized. Oh crap, I’ll call Jenny tomorrow not knowing 14/x
Not knowing what is to come. Thursday night 3/25 I call my step-mom Jenny. What is going on? I heard Gma might be in the hospital with pneumonia. What comes next is a ton of bricks. The convo is almost an hour of which I remember 15 minutes. I called back today to clarify. 15/x
As of tonight, my Gma has tested positive. My Gpa has also tested positive. My step-mom Jenny cleaned out their fridge in Shelton, NE and drive back to an Omaha suburb to self isolate and await her results. My G’parents aren’t coming home anytime soon. 16/x
My step-mom should know any day now. She is isolated at home and away from everyone. I share this story as my grandparents suffer/recover b/c I am afraid. My Gma is off oxygen for now. My Gpa is not. He’s confused. My biggest issue is w/ the Kearney hospital. 17/x
The Kearney hospital (and I’m not assessing blame) has a 93 yr old man with symptoms in line with COVID-19 and admitted him yet had him in their care from a Sunday until a Wednesday and tried to release him. He is COVID-19 positive. There are 4 hospital days of exposure 18/x
4 days in a hospital and yet no one thought to test him. They determined he was ready to be released until his wife (my Gma) was admitted that very same day. I’m not blaming the in home care nurse that went into quarantine. What I am blaming is a system of failures. 19/x
They could have been exposed in numerous way. What I do know is this. 2 of 4 confirmed Buffalo Co cases are my family. My G’parents are both positive for COVID-19. My step-mom Jenny is likely next. My Gpa wasn’t tested & remained at a Kearney hospital for 3 days. 20/x
For 3 days, he was hospitalized with all the symptoms yet never tested exposing so many not knowing that full PPE was necessary. He’s on oxygen trying to recover. In isolation. Gma in isolation w/o oxygen. Jenny in isolation awaiting results. 21/x
I share this not to spread fear but awareness. Did someone at the Kearney hospital mess up? Yes. “Go home, isolate & don’t tell anyone”
It’s time to tell everyone
