What did we learn UNI edition

Funny how there has been much less complaining about these arrow routes now that we're actually getting some blocking and making some yards.

Not sure who would complain about a play that picks up seven yards on 1st down though, right?

Two things though on this:

  1. The play will always get more yards (no matter who is receiving the ball) when a defender is drawn away from the flat to where the ball is thrown.
  2. I get that we want teams to always have to watch Fidone's motion and figure out whether he's going to block or whether he's going out for the pass and there's an element of "RPO" with this that is good, but that pass play is probably going to be more successful when it's a small, shifty guy getting the reception to try to make the first guy miss.

I have no complaints on any of it, though. Really don't. And I really hope Fidone gets a piece of the action because he has worked his a** off as a blocker and just an overall team builder guy.

What I would hope we see moving forward are the continuous counters in this split zone series, which in turn open up the run and this H-back RPO ect....   Especially with defenses flying downhill and blowing up blockers near the LOS.  A pretty good rule of thumb is to attack the defender making the tackle.    If that was the slot defender for example, you'll see teams slip that block and run a slant.  KC did this really well with Tyreek.  But, obviously the CB, S, & ILB can all be targeted in addition to the Nickle/OLB.  When that H-back in the flat becomes lethal is when you can run off the coverage and slip him into the flat.

Still hadn't worked back through all of our offensive plays from last week yet. Click play to start the video at the right time.

Look at Fidone drive his guy back on this block, even brushing a second guy with the movement so that Dowdell can break free to the outside:

Fidone's blocking this year has been fire.

That was just a corner lol

I think he had a couple whiffs the first game of the year, but he's been better since. Last year was not good, so any improvement this year will help.

Oh good catch - I didn't notice that.

EJ's touchdown run on our last score was a great play because we were overloaded to the right side and he cut it back to the left. Lots of really great plays on offense in that game even though "it was just Northern Illinois."

I wonder if EJ might be better against good defensive lines because he might be better than Dowdell when the blocking isn't really there.

Yeah, I think that's entirely possible.  EJ didn't look overly smooth on that run but it was good vision to find the opening to the outside.
