Iowa - What Did We Learn?

We have one identity and it's losing, specifically in spectacular fashion and the leadership is complacent since there has been no changes.

Well who will last longer between Rhule and Fickell who I believe was extended to 2031?
Rhule, easy.  Fickell's buyout is considerably less, even with the extension. Rhule's right now, today, is 55.8, while Wisconsin would owe Fickell 40.  We paid Frost 15 I believe for reference.

I don’t get the extensions though, no one was coming for Fickell.

Time for bed and time to but the season to bed as I don’t expect anything else in the bowl game than what we have already seen.  I’ve wasted too much time on this team.

Never liked the Rhule hire and disliked it even more when he put his staff together.

When talking about the type of players they are trying to recruit, you will often hear these coaches say that they are looking for kids that know how to win; kids that have come from successful programs.

Why doesn’t that apply to the coaches?

Why did the powers that be (at the time) decide that Rhule, a career .500 coach, would be the one to build Nebraska, when there was no evidence of it. Temple and Baylor is not evidence.

And finally, when given the blank check to bring in a great staff, he goes  the buddy route.

Seriously, if you are a recruit considering Nebraska and you saw this team lose to a pathetic Iowa team with no QB, 5 first downs, and lead running back having 38 yards, would you want to commit to this team? I bet that kid from UTAH is thinking to himself “ man, I dodged a bullet”. Rhule does not get how s#!tty performance like today hurts the supposed rebuilding. Iowa had no business winning today. We did everything in our power to lose this game.

We learned that winning is still a very very hard hill to climb.  This new College football system for the playoffs makes me ill.  Its all about the SEC and a few other teams right now.  Sure, the Big 10 has some relevant teams in place this season, but if any of these teams had 2 losses, they would be out.  Have to listen to how great the SEC is every Saturday is making me ill and really hate college football.  In another post it talked about arms race and the playoffs.......as a program we are so far away from even competing for a playoff spot.  We can't beat Iowa yet....we can't beat Illinois, Ohio St, etc.  We can't think about the playoffs right now.

Another thing learned.  Stop the stupid off season stuff. Sure cover the team but no one has won or earned jack in the last 15 years.  So no one deserves accolades and special attention.  We have been a problem sunshine pumping before they have done anything.  The players are not hungry as the fans are everywhere.  It’s not earned.  I want dawgs on this team.  Do we even have any?  Where’s my Ameer, Rex, Suh…guys known by one name and you know what it brings. Maybe Ty but it took him 5 years to get there.  I want it day 1.

But I would argue that Nebraska has a stronger booster network...maybe not. Regardless, if Rhule and Fickell continue to hover around .500, I don't see either program retaining them.

I am not sure why people think Rhule will produce anything other than a 0.5 win percentage. His whole career has been 0.5 win percentage, do we think he will magically become a championship caliber coach next year. If having one of the highest ranked QBs did not help him get a winning season, do we think he will turn into Nick Saban next year. At best, we might finish 7-5 next year and still lose to Iowa at home. Frankly, I am not expecting anything from Rhule. He is a dud. We will keep him two more years to lower the amount we owe him. Everyone will expect Raiola will be Tom Brady or Patrick Mahoney next year as they are already making excuses that he is only a freshman. In my opinion, it does not take three years for you to see where things are heading. We just made another bad hire and we have to live with it. We will try again in two years.

Rhule is nothing more than a CEO figure head.  This staff is nothing more than NFL reject mentality.  Rhule seems like he is lost when we have the ball and seems lost when were on defense.  I think we over paid for this NFL reject, and now are in the same situation we have been in now for several coaching staffs.  We can't afford to fire them, but who could we hire to replace them?  Right now, with the current play off system, I think about 20-25 teams have realistic shot at making the playoffs each season.  The usual suspects will have a place at the table...and the other 60 Power 4 teams fighting for the final 4 or 5 spots.  Were not close to being in that contention yet.  Whether its coaching staff, or player improvement, we not close yet.  Whenever you finish a season 1-5, your not trending in the right direction.  If we finished the season 3-3 I would have said things looked better and trending in the right direction.  But finished with the same failures that we have finished with for the last few seasons.
